Sweden's own version of the Loch Ness monster, the Storsjoe or Great Lake monster, has been caught on film by surveillance videos, an association that installed the cameras said Friday. The legend of the Swedish beast has swirled for nearly four centuries, with some 200 sightings reported in the lake in central Sweden. "On Thursday at 12:21 pm, we filmed the movements of a live being. And it was not a pike, nor a perch, we're sure of that," Gunnar Nilsson, the head of a shopkeepers' association in Svenstavik, told AFP. The association, together with the Jaemtland province and local...

It lurked in the wreck of an old battleship 160ft below the surface – a true monster of the deep. Diver Paul Worsley could hardly believe the size of the giant crab he found in Lyme Bay, off the Dorset coast. Careful to avoid its fearsome claws, he managed to get it into a bag and raise it to the surface. For his efforts, he can congratulate himself on capturing what experts believe is the biggest edible crab ever landed. It weighed 17lb and had a shell width of 12in while each of its massive claws was as big as...

It’s alive! We thought it might be over but some of us never dared fully believe it. Last week was like one of those moments in a horror movie when the worst terror recedes, the screen goes blank and then reopens on green fields or a lover’s tender embrace. Drained but still naive audiences breathe a collective sigh of relief. The plot twists have all been resolved; the threat is gone; the quiet spreads. And then . . . Put your own movie analogy in here. Glenn Close in the bathtub in Fatal Attraction – whoosh! she’s back at your...

Alexandre Robert, a French 15-year-old gang raped in Dubai___________ They drove Alex past his house and into a dark patch of desert, between a row of new villas and a power plant, took away his cellphone, threatened him with a knife and a club and told him they would kill his family members if he ever reported them. Then, Alex says, they stripped off his pants and one by one sodomized him in the back seat of the car. They dumped Alex on the side of the road across from one of Dubai's luxury hotel towers.[...]The authorities not only discouraged Alex from...

The inside of his ears had been burned with cigarettes. He was forced to drink shampoo. >His caretakers bent two of his toes to the point that an amputation may be necessary, according to reports. When a Westgate Resorts administrative assistant spotted the 7-year-old trying to serve himself cereal at the buffet in their Osceola County sales center earlier this month, the first thing she noticed was his trembling arms. They were too thin. His eyes were sunken."He was really skinny," said Westgate employee Hilda Berrios. "He looked like one of those kids you see on TV." "As I focused,...

Unidentified Ghoul Fauxtography Model Usually, as children, we are reassured that the monsters we see on film are only fakes and not to worry, that such creeps and fiends are created only for the camera by crafty directors and special effects crews. Unfortunately, nowadays, that's the very reason to fear them.

South Korea paid the Taliban $950,000 -- or $50,000 a head -- to secure the release of 19 church workers abducted in southeastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials who took part in the negotiations told ABC News. The negotiations took on urgency, the Afghan officials said, after two female hostages who were released last month reported being repeatedly raped by their Taliban captors. The kidnappers also killed two of the male hostages, who were abducted six weeks ago riding by bus through southeastern Ghazni province. "We have reports the various Taliban commanders were fighting over the women hostages," said Mirajuddin Pathan, the...

The changes will make it easier for single people and lesbians to receive fertility treatment on the NHS. The move, which is part of a shake-up of laws on the use of human tissues, will also allow the creation of " Frankenstein" embryos - human and animal cells mixed together - for medical research. Under current laws, fertility clinics have to consider the baby's need for a father before providing treatment. But today's draft Human Tissue and Embryos Bill says this is no longer necessary. The draft legislation bans couples from choosing the gender of their child. It also tightens...

Platform and positions NAMBLA describes itself as a "support group for intergenerational relationships," and uses the slogan "sexual freedom for all." THEY are the unheard comments which have intrigued the world for decades — the hidden musings of a madman. Silent home movies of Adolf Hitler casually chatting to his lover Eva Braun have consistently fascinated and frustrated historians. For 60 years they have been desperate to decipher exactly what history’s most notorious figure is saying. Now they know. Computer technology has been developed that can lip-read people who have been filmed at almost any angle. The breakthrough means the dictator’s statements can finally be revealed — word for word. In a bizarre, calculated manner, Hitler can be seen chatting to...

HANINE, Lebanon (AFP) - Strawberry jam, bullets and a lock of human hair. These are among the mundane and macabre war trophies displayed at a makeshift roadside museum in this southern Lebanese village. Somebody has laid the items out neatly on the cement driveway in front of a garage. A fence made from two rows of string is designed to keep people from getting too close. A yellow flag of the Hezbollah Shiite militia flies over one corner of the display, and Hezbollah posters are stuck to a wall above a collection of seized Israeli food: cans of tuna and...

Twisted young British parents planned to sacrifice their precious baby in the evil cause of jihad by mass murder. Fanatical terror suspect Abdula Ahmed Ali, 25, and his wife, Cossor, 23, are among those being interrogated by police as suspects in the massive plot to attack trans-Atlantic flights in midair. What the outwardly normal couple had secretly plotted is almost too horrifying to consider, cops said. The Alis planned to use 6-month-old son Zain's baby bottle as a liquid bomb, blowing themselves and their child up, along with hundreds of others aboard the flight. [snip] To their stunned friends and...

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents signaled the fight is still on after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death, posting an Internet video Saturday showing the beheading of three alleged Shiite death squad members in revenge for killing Sunnis. The video — as grisly as any the al-Qaida in Iraq leader issued — was clearly designed to quash hopes that the Sunni-dominated insurgency might change tactics by ending attacks on Shiite civilians and institutions, especially the police. Fellow Sunni insurgent groups sent condolences for al-Zarqawi in Internet messages Saturday and warned Sunnis not to cooperate with the Iraqi government, an apparent call for unity...

The sun beat like a hammer, not a cloud was in the sky. The mid-day air ran thick with dust, my throat was parched and dry. With microphone clutched tight in hand and cameraman in tow, I ducked beneath a fallen roof, surprised to hear "stay low." My eyes blinked several times before in shadow I could see, the figure stretched across the rubble, steps away from me. He wore a cloak of burlap strips, all shades of grey and brown, that hung in tatters till he seemed to melt into the ground. He never turned his head or took...

There are 2 billion children running around the planet and five new ones born every second. But don't expect any pink-and-blue congratulations from Adrianne Frost. In fact, the author and comedian would be just as happy if you took every little bugger and muzzled him — on the subway, in stores, in restaurants, churches, parks and, well, everywhere. Treasonous? Exactly! "You have every right not to like children who are ill-behaved," says Frost, who puts just about anyone under 3 feet tall in that category. "Just because they're children doesn't mean that it's okay for them to act the way...

FORT LAUDERDALE - A Broward county judge on Monday refused to release a 17-year-old suspect in the beating death of a homeless man last week. The other suspect's hearing was delayed one day. The judge, Steven DeLuca, also ordered Thomas Daugherty held for 21 days under juvenile detention and signed an order for a psychological examination of the Plantation youth. Daugherty is being treated as a juvenile, prosecutors have not yet formally announced whether the teen will be charged as a juvenile or an adult.

Two witnesses saw the brutal slaying of a homeless man in a Fort Lauderdale park, an arrest report released Sunday reveals. The two watched as Brian Hooks and Thomas Daugherty walked up to Norris Gaynor on Thursday morning, baseball bats in hand, according to Fort Lauderdale police. Moments later, the witnesses saw Daugherty smash his bat into Gaynor's chest and head, the report says, leaving him unconscious and dying on the bench he chose as his bed.

UK scientists have won permission to clone a human embryo that will have genetic material from two mothers. The Newcastle University team will transfer the nucleus of a human embryo made by one man and woman into an unfertilized egg from another woman. The groundbreaking work aims to prevent mothers from passing certain genetic diseases on to their unborn babies. Such diseases arise from DNA found outside the nucleus and thus inherited separately from DNA in the nucleus.

Imagine your street 20 years from now. Who might be living next to you? It could be a lesbian couple and their biological daughter - created when an egg of one of the women was fertilised with the synthetic sperm made from the skin cells of the other. The family on the other side may have a healthy boy, created in the test tube when sperm from the father was inserted into an artificial egg created from the skin of the mother. This is not as far-fetched as it may seem. Scientists have worked out how to make "artificial" germline...

What's your favorite horror movie...and why? What fried your hair, and still makes it jump if you get a little too tired and you remember a sequence or two from something that scared the stuff out of you. I've always dismissed horror movies as a waste of time, but the older I get, the more I realize they must serve some function--some cathartic function--because they are an enduring genre, and each generation likes to find its own favorite scary movies. Heard a commentator saying the other day, the reason the country is so preoccuppied with horror films right now is,...

After banging around on some threads lately, it has become obvious that a decent number of FReepers are fans of Japan’s most famous monster, GODZILLA. This is certainly understandable; that worthy creature has appeared in 28 movies over 50 years, has had two animated TV series, as well as a series of novels devoted to his exploits. Most of the movies we enjoyed as kids, whiling away Saturday afternoons in the days before cable with those great old ‘60s and ‘70s films with the Big G and his buddies Rodan, Mothra, Angilas, and a host of others. Lots of fun...

Cruel smugglers masquerading as a suburban Long Island family held dozens of illegal aliens as virtual slaves, seizing their wages and forcing them to live in squalor, officials said yesterday. Federal agents rescued 69 Peruvian aliens, including 13 children, the youngest a 1-year-old, officials said. The leaders of the shocking smuggling ring were an Amityville couple and their daughter, who neighbors thought were just an average middle-class family. But Mariluz Zavala, 42, her husband Jorge Ibanez, 41, and their daughter, Evelyn Ibanez, 20, were accused of running the smuggling ring since 2000. "These aliens were held in virtual servitude as...

There`s been a lot of talk since 9/11 about anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination, and yet according to actual hate-crime statistics, it is Jews who’ve had the most to fear. According to the FBI`s Hate Crimes Statistics Report for 2002, there were 155 anti-Islamic incidents and 931 anti-Jewish incidents that year. And as anyone who follows these developments knows, the majority of these anti-Jewish acts were perpetrated by Arabs and/or Muslims. Of course, the media has remained largely silent on this issue, preferring instead to stick to their usual script of brown victims and white oppressors. But Jews themselves do not...
