Remarks by the President at the Five-Year Anniversary of the Financial Crisis South Court12:31 P.M. EDTTHE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. Please have a seat. Before I begin, let me say a few words about the tragedy that's unfolding not far away from here at the Washington Navy Yard. That's part of why our event today was delayed.I’ve been briefed by my team on the situation. *** Bad timing: When you’re in a rut, nothing seems to go right. That’s true in sports, in life and, yes, in American politics. And for the Obama White House, little seems to be going right, especially when it comes to timing. Last week, President Obama gave a speech to the nation on Syria about the need to use U.S. force there -- at the very same time as the United States appeared to reach a diplomatic breakthrough, which produced a disjointed message. Then on Friday, the president sat down for an interview with ABC that would air on Sunday....

Vice Adm. Bill French, the head of all Navy installations, said as of 8:30 p.m. that roughly 2,000 civilians remained at Navy Yard and that it could take until 11 p.m. or later to finish processing them off the base. In addition, French said that the number of wounded stands at 14. All are civilians, he said. Removal of the employees was painfully slow, because the FBI is still interviewing every person leaving the base out of concern that a second suspect may still be at large. And SWAT teams are still finding people hiding in places on the base,...

After briefly addressing the tragic Navy Yard shootings, President Obama delivered a sharply partisan message to Republicans on Monday, while two individuals connected with the attack were still at large in Washington, D.C. Obama warned of an "extreme wing" of the Republican party that was willing to shutdown the government over Obamacare. Obama delayed his speech by about 50 minutes after news of the attack broke Monday morning, but pressed forward with his full remarks in the South Court Auditorium of the White House. "The larger point is asked — after all that we have been through, after all the...

During CNN's live coverage of Monday's shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, anchor Carol Costello asked when the last time was that a gunman wreaked "havoc at a U.S. military facility." In 2009, a jihadist killed 13 in a mass-shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. "I used to work in Washington, live in Washington. This seems so unusual to me that a gunman could create this kind of havoc at a U.S. military facility," Costello stated. "Have you ever heard of it happening before, Brian?" she asked correspondent Brian Todd, reporting live from the vicinity of the shooting.
