The revenue comes from foreign donations, drug money, "protection" money and criminal activity like smuggling and kidnapping. And as officials note, the money goes a long way. "The insurgency is a relatively cheap war for the Taliban to fight," an August report out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said, noting that money buys "a lot" of rifles, explosives, grenade launchers and foot soldiers known as "$10 Taliban" since that's their day's pay. The Taliban do have a system for incentive pay, as the soldiers get bonuses -- double or triple pay -- for planting improvised explosive devices. And they...

One of my favorite reality shows turns out to be completely fake. Operation Repo is show on TruTV (formerly CourTV) where a team of reposession agents go around repossessing vehicles for finance companies. Everytime I watch the show, one of the guys (Matt) is always roughing someone and I always wonder how they get away with it.. i know now, it's all FAKE! If the show was real, Matt would violate the Collateral Recovery Act of the State of California as repossesion agents are not allowed to rough people up. Not sure I can watch the show anymore now that...

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2009 – Defense leaders are encouraged about operations in Afghanistan, but meeting long-term objectives there will require “an enormous” worldwide commitment to train and grow Afghan forces, a Pentagon spokesman said. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates “is encouraged thus far by how things are going operationally” in the U.S. Marine-led offensive that began two weeks ago in Afghanistan’s southern provinces, Geoff Morrell told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing yesterday. Morrell acknowledged it has been “an extraordinarily difficult month” with 22 U.S. servicemembers and 17 other coalition members killed in the offensive dubbed Operation Khanjar, or “strike...

Jessica Mazzone is recovering from operation by Dr. John Boockvar. Writhing in pain inside a dilapidated hospital in the Dominican Republic, Brooklyn native Jessica Mazzone didn't think she'd ever walk again. The 28-year-old flight attendant had fallen three stories from a hotel balcony on the eastern tip of the island, snapping her spine and shattering her left leg. Local doctors insisted they had to operate on her at the hospital. A journey to the U.S. would almost certainly leave her paralyzed, Mazzone was told. Her family feared the worst until a relative suggested they contact a famed surgeon who...

MOSCOW, Idaho, Oct. 31, 2008 – One decision turned Chase Clark’s life upside-down, but another is helping him realize the dreams he didn't think were possible. While still in high school in rural Blackfoot, Idaho, Clark signed up for the Army National Guard because of the great benefits and the "opportunity to make something" of himself. Immediately following graduation, he took advantage of the educational benefits and enrolled at Idaho State University. "I never expected to get activated, but I knew it was a possibility," he said. That’s exactly what happened his first semester, however. Clark found himself serving...

Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos," the effort to urge conservatives and Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton in order to prolong the Democratic nomination battle, certainly annoys MSNBC's Chris Matthews who, during primary coverage Tuesday night, denounced the "mischief-making" by "a talk jock." In the 11:30 PM EDT half hour, Matthews offered a "Keith [Olbermann]-style special comment" about how "anyone who voted to screw up the political system of this country with the purpose of mischief should carry that with them the rest their lives." He called it "a ridiculous way to use the vote for which people fought and died,"...

WASHINGTON, Aug. 21, 2007 – The Defense Department announced today that it will close the Talon intelligence reporting system Sept. 17 and maintain a record copy of the collected data in accordance with intelligence oversight requirements. WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2007 – Coalition soldiers today launched a major joint offensive, Operation Phantom Strike, in a powerful crackdown to disrupt al Qaeda and Iranian-supported extremist operations in Iraq. Recent coalition offensive operations have reduced the effectiveness of extremist groups, military officials said. Operations have denied terrorists safe havens, disrupted extremist support zones and supply lines, captured or killed significant al Qaeda and other extremist leaders, and liberated large segments of the Iraqi population from their grasp. ANBAKIA — Two key towns were held captive by a terrorist threat in the Diyala province, effectively blocking a supply route for many citizens in the Diyala River Valley. As the anti-Iraqi forces continued to terrorize the towns, many of the citizens were displaced and became refugees in the nearby town of Anbakia, overpopulating the town and creating an even further shortage of food and services. That all changed on July 22 with the start of Operation Olympus.
