Her favourite sayings were "F*** Hitler" and "F*** the Nazis". And even today, 39 years after the great man's death, she can still be coaxed into repeating them with that unmistakable Churchillian inflection. Many an admiral or peer of the realm was shocked by the tirade from the bird's cage during crisis meetings with the PM. But it always brought a smile to the war leader's face. Churchill bought Charlie - giving him a boy's name despite the fact she was female - in 1937. She took pride of place in a bizarre menagerie of pets including lambs, pigs, cattle,...

"F*** Hitler! F*** the Nazis!" says Charlie, a female blue and gold macaw which Churchill bought in 1937, two years before the outbreak of World War II in Europe. "Parrots are remarkably adept at mimicking sounds and voices," says an article about Charlie in the February issue of Jack, a British men's magazine, which hits the...

Jaime Nebot, Mayor of Guayaquil, presented the parrot to journalists at a press conference, reports Teerra.com. He said: "Here is the parrot that will be in charge to answer all the undesirable comments that I have no time to answer. "Some people only approach me with nonsense talk so the parrot will answer back in the same way because I need to use my time to work." Mr Nebot has been heavily criticised by the press and the public...

Bureaucracy on the Wires The British Empire was a massive entity: It was truly global in its proportions. Communication was therefore one of the keys of successful administration. From the middle to late nineteenth century onwards it would lie to the telegraph to make this communication possible. However, even the speed of this form of communication could be slowed down immeasurably in the mass of bureacracy and form that characterised the day to day running of the empire. This amusing example is taken from an extract in The Leisure of an Egyptian Official by Lord Edward Cecil. An Official Correspondence:...

WONDERFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD by Gene Royer - a voice of reason in a babbling society. July 14, 2003 My gay Filipino neighbors, Luis and Whatshisname, have a very talented parrot named Parotika. She is green, of course, but with a nice, red crown and a few red feathers in her tail and wing tips. They've had her for the six years I've known them, and Luis told me she is only about ten. She eats a special bird food mixture, as well as raw veggies such as carrots, lettuce and broccoli. She stays in a large cage in...

The vicar has received complaints from people who have become targets for verbal abuse from the exotic bird. The mischievous African grey parrot called Charlie has been living with a flock of pigeons in the bell-tower at St Mary's Church in Mirfield. Three-year-old Charlie regularly turns the air blue by swearing and wolf-whistling at passers-by. But despite several attempts to catch the parrot he remains free as a bird. Owner Zarina France, 34, of Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury, said even Charlie's favourite monkey nuts had...
