A new study says that on average, more than half of the ink from inkjet cartridges is wasted when users toss them in the garbage. Why is that interesting? According to the study, users are tossing the cartridges when their printers are telling them they're out of ink, not when they necessarily are out of ink. The study by TÜV Rheinland looked at inkjet efficiency across multiple brands, including Epson (who commissioned the study), Lexmark, Canon, HP, Kodak, and Brother. They studied the efficiency of both single and multi-ink cartridges. Espon's printers were among the highest rated, at more than...

PASADENA, Calif. — Sometimes a particular piece of plastic is just what you need. You have lost the battery cover to your cellphone, perhaps. Or your daughter needs to have the golden princess doll she saw on television. Now. In a few years, it will be possible to make these items yourself. You will be able to download three-dimensional plans online, then push Print. Hours later, a solid object will be ready to remove from your printer. .................................................. “In the future, everyone will have a printer like this at home,” said Hod Lipson, a professor at Cornell University, who has...

Tiny dots produced by some laser printers are a secret code that can allow the government to track down counterfeiters, a new study concludes, raising the hackles of privacy advocates. The Electronic Frontier Foundation said its researchers recently broke the code behind the tiny tracking dots and said the US Secret Service confirmed that the tracking is part of a deal struck with selected color laser printer manufacturers to identify counterfeiters. "We've found that the dots from at least one line of printers encode the date and time your document was printed, as well as the serial number of...

Finally taking the plunge and getting high speed internet. If you have an A-I-O printer, how do you get it to work properly if it has a fax machine? My phone line is all the way on the other side of the room compared to where my cable outlet is. If you have any tips, I'd appreciate it.

"IT struck me recently that buying printers is a lot like buying hamsters. Both are so cute when you get them, not to mention cheap, and the whole family oohs and aahs about the fun times that lie ahead. Only later, when it is time to clean the cage - or in the case of the printers, to change the ink - do you realize what a hellish choice you have made. Consider last Sunday night, for example. At 10 p.m., my daughter dropped a bombshell: a high school science report had to be printed. Although the problem at first...

Any tech junkies here? Hey folks. I had to do a clean restore on my computer. Now everythings fine except one thing. My printer which is an HP Photosmart 1000. I try using the product's installation CD and it won't auto start. So, when I go into my computer and the CD's contents and click install a noise comes up like a dialogue box opening and nothing happens. The same is true when I downloaded the product's software off the HP website. Anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks for any advice. PS, I'm running on Windows Millenium Edition.

A New Use for Old Printers: Treating Burn Victims Researchers in the US are using old inkjet printers to produce sheets of human skin to be used on burn victims. They think that this 'skin-printing' method will minimize rejections by patients and reduce post-operative complications. In this article, the Wall Street Journal (paid registration needed) writes that while the technology is still in its early stages, it could be used clinically within two years. This could be a life-saving technology for the 20% of burn patients who have the most extensive burns. Considering that each year, some 45,000 people...

Inevitably, consumers griped about the high cost of replacement cartridges from Lexmark and other printer firms. And the used cartridges were perfectly good, except for needing a refill. So an industry was born - companies that collected the old cartridges, refilled them, and resold them for much less than the printer companies.

I need to buy a printer. I run two small businesses off of my computer, one web-based and one not. I want a laser printer because I need to make excellent copies of text for handouts. I want a printer that has excellent quality, and inexpensive and easy to run because I am unable to figure out anything with more than three steps. I also want it to hold a decent amount of paper and print envelops easily. I have tried a few review sites like epinion and PC world and there just wasnt a lot there. MOst of the...
