I saw a quote on Facebook and I was surprised that the person in question said this. Let's see if my fellow FReepers can guess who said the following... "Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things, but their number is negligible and they are stupid."

What do these things have in common? They're all questionable government spending projects in a time when our economy is struggling and people can't get jobs....or, maybe we just made them up. Put yourself to the test. See if you can outwit the Rebel Economist before she stumps you. So what is it: REAL or FAKE?

Looks like our elected officials are failing at all sorts of things. Latest on the FAIL list is knowledge of the Constitution. Since many are required to swear (or affirm) an oath to uphold that document, you’d think that they’d know a bit about it. But then again, you might also think that most U.S. citizens would know at least a bit about what’s in the Constitution, right? But you’d be wrong on both counts, of course. As HotAir reports: “The bad news: the general public gets an F, with just a 49% average on the 33-question civics test. The...

I stumbled upon this quiz that will help people to understand where they stand on the political scale. I took the quiz and learned where I stand compared to the average person who took the quiz. It's my guess that most of the people who have taken this quiz are much, much more liberal then I am. I say so because most of the evidence shows that Americans are a lot more conservative than this site's average says. The problem is that the site can only get an average from those who actually respond to their quiz. Sadly, it's...

In the process, I stumbled upon this graph that took me to a site with a quiz that will help people to understand where they stand on the political scale. So I took the quiz and learned where I stand compared to the average...

College fails to teach civic knowledge - including American history and national institutions - and has an influence on liberal leanings among students, a new study says. The study, conducted by the conservative Intercollegiate Studies Institute, specifically cited typically liberal positions on gay marriage and school prayer. Richard Brake, the director of ISI's Culture of Enterprise Initiative, said high schools could be partly to blame for a lack of civic knowledge but college courses should provide more concentrated study. "You should reinforce it and go beyond it," he said. "Learning is about reinforcement." The study tested 2,508 Americans with various...

The greatest danger is a closed mind and a finger-on-the-trigger. The minds are closing all over Europe; rather late in the day, a small resistance emerges. American minds have also been shutting down for many years. For example, one is really not allowed to talk about race or religion (gender is fair game–look at all the photos of naked women that still surround us). One cannot say “black” or “African-American” without raising a storm. One dare not say “Islam” or “Muslim” without raising an even bigger storm. Americans (students, professors, journalists, film stars, media talking heads, left-liberal bloggers) are especially...

The typology study's finding of significant cleavages within parties not only runs counter to the widespread impression of a nation increasingly divided into two unified camps, but also raises questions about political alignments in the future. In particular, the study suggests that if the political agenda turns away from issues of defense and security, prospects for party unity could weaken significantly. As the following chapters detail, numerous opportunities exist for building coalitions across party lines on many issues currently facing the nation coalitions that, in many cases, include some strange political bedfellows. Overall, there are many more shades to...

If there is any presidential speech that has captured a place in popular culture, it is the Gettysburg Address, seemingly recited by school children for decades. The truth is, however, Lincoln’s most memorable words are now remembered by very few. Of the 2,508 Americans taking ISI’s civic literacy test, 71% fail. Story Below The test contains 33 questions designed to measure knowledge of America’s founding principles, political history, international relations, and market economy. Voters Fail the Test By Kathleen Parker Tuesday, November 25, 2008; 7:56 PM WASHINGTON -- So much for the wisdom of The People. A new report from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) on the nation's civic literacy finds that most Americans are too ignorant to vote. Out of 2,500 American quiz-takers, including college students, elected officials and other randomly selected citizens, nearly 1,800 flunked a 33-question test on basic civics. In fact, elected officials scored slightly lower than the general public with an average score of 44 percent compared to 49 percent. Only 0.8 percent of all test-takers scored an...
