I need help with RealPlayer. I have the last free version that was made available. RealPlayer apparently tries to connect to the Internet whenever the program is opened. This is, I think, causing it to crash whenever I play videos. I was without internet access for a week and the program never stopped working once.

Hackers are actively exploiting a zero-day hole in RealNetworks’ RealPlayer media player, a software program installed on tens of millions of Windows computers worldwide. RealPlayer zero-day flaw under attack The in-the-wild attacks, which began late last night (October 18), targets a previously unknown and unpatched ActiveX vulnerability in the way RealPlayer interacts with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser. The flaw is causing drive-by malware downloads when an IE user simply browsers to a maliciously rigged Web page, according to an alert issued by anti-virus vendor Symantec. The issue affects an ActiveX object installed by RealPlayer, accessible over the web using Internet...

For Seattle's biggest-spending liberal benefactor, bankrupt Air America was a costly flyer. Deep-pocketed political donor Rob Glaser undertook his biggest-ever political investment in 2004 when he handed over $10 million to prop up lefty talk-show network Air America Radio, giving him 36.7 percent ownership. But while the founder and CEO of Seattle-based RealNetworks Inc. successfully helped fund the 2006 Democratic revolt in Congress, he has been bloodied attempting a similar revolution in progressive talk radio. The network's challenge to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talkers for the nation's hearts, minds, and ad revenues has ended up in bankruptcy, and Glaser,...

While Windows and other Microsoft Corp. products are the favorite targets of hackers, the malicious code writers are increasingly targeting software that run on other operating systems, including Apple Computer Inc.'s Mac and open-source Linux, a security research group said Monday. In its list of the top 20 most critical Internet vulnerabilities in the first quarter of the year, the Sans Institute reported that software fixes were released for flaws in RealNetworks Inc.'s RealOne Player and RealPlayer. Security flaws were found in versions of the multimedia players running on Windows, Mac OS and Linux. In addition, vulnerabilities were listed for...

RealNetworks has released a security patch to fix a flaw in its RealPlayer software that could allow compromised code to be run on users computers. The flaw, which was rated "highly critical" by Secunia, is in the most recent versions of the software for both Windows and OS X. Also, Secunia said that some of the older Linux versions were at risk for the flaw. "RealNetworks has received no reports of machines compromised as a result of the now-remedied vulnerabilities," the company said on its website. "RealNetworks takes all security vulnerabilities very seriously."

Carrying over from last year, I predict that Burst.com will beat Microsoft in their current lawsuit. But to avoid having to eat crow again over timing, let me put this in greater context. IF a trial actually takes place, as it is now scheduled to do this summer, Burst will easily win. Microsoft is at a disadvantage already as a bully. Burst will probably get Judge Motz to tell the jury that Microsoft deliberately destroyed evidence, and it doesn't hurt, either, that Burst is just plain right on all counts -- Microsoft DID violate their patents, DID violate Burst's non-disclosure...

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Militants who said they belong to a group that has claimed responsibility for kidnappings and killings in Iraq beheaded a man identified only as a Bulgarian in a video posted on the Internet Monday. It was not clear when the video was made and its authenticity could not immediately be verified. Bulgarian officials said Monday they had examined the video but were "unable to identify the executed man because of the material's bad quality." The militants in the video said they were from the Tawhid and Jihad group, which had claimed to have kidnapped two Bulgarian...

<p>RealNetworks acknowledged on Wednesday that three flaws affecting different versions of its media player could allow attackers to create corrupt music or video files that, when played, take control of a victim's PC.</p> <p>The flaws, found by U.K.-based Next-Generation Security Software, can affect RealNetworks' RealOne Player, RealOne Player version 2, RealPlayer 8, RealPlayer 10 Beta, and the company's RealOne Enterprise products. To exploit them, an attacker crafts the data in a media file in a certain way. When people play or stream the corrupted file in a vulnerable version of RealPlayer, the attacker's code will run, compromising the PC.</p>

RealNetworks Sues Microsoft Over Antitrust By RACHEL KONRAD, AP Business Writer SAN JOSE, Calif. - RealNetworks Inc. filed an antitrust suit against Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, alleging that its competitor has illegally monopolized the growing field of digital media by requiring every Windows user to take Microsoft's media player, whether they want it or not. RealNetworks alleged that the software giant has violated state and federal antitrust laws, exploiting its monopoly to restrict competition. The Seattle-based digital media company said Microsoft "pursued a broad course of predatory conduct over a period of years by abusing its monopoly power, resulting in...
