Leading retailer Sports Direct has apologised to customers after a security guard allegedly barred “Jews” from entering its store. The security guard was removed from the store after he told Jewish students they could not enter the branch in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, on Friday afternoon. The guard, who was sacked from the security company supplying Sports Direct with staff, reportedly told two Year 7 students wearing Yavneh College school uniform: “No Jews, no Jews”. Lawyer David Rosen, whose son was prevented from entering the retailer by the guard, complained to managers. In a Facebook post, he wrote: “Other children from the...

I’ll admit, there is an argument – a thin, riddled, web of an argument – that it was U.S. interests that drove military interventions gone wrong in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don’t buy the argument: As it morphed into a nation-building fantasy, it became disastrously, tragically and recklessly mistaken. But I can see at least that tarnished glimmer of national interest flash in the sludge before sinking from sight.Nothing like this is to be found in the sands of Libya. I had no choice, got trapped into visiting the local SS office today. The friendly rentacop was there, same one who wanted me to walk way across the parking lot to put my cellphone in the car. He was busily searching the purses of two little old ladies when I got in line, my turn came and he started the standard speech. then, he recognized me, he started to say "cellphone" but he cut it off after the first syllable. At any rate I made it to the waiting area. After about 15 minutes I told him "I'll be right...

Facing pressure to crack down on crime amid a record budget deficit, Oakland is joining other U.S. cities that are turning over more law-enforcement duties to private armed guards. The City Council recently voted to hire International Services Inc., a private security agency, to patrol crime-plagued districts. While a few Oakland retail districts previously have pooled cash to pay for unarmed security services, using public funds to pay for private armed guards would mark a first for the city. Hiring private guards is less expensive than hiring new officers. Oakland -- facing a record $80 million budget shortfall -- spends...

I needed to get a prescription refilled today, so I made the trip to town. I figured to kill two birds with one stone, and headed for the Social Security office. I need to change my Medicare plan. I was having one of my bad days, hips hurting, knees hurting, somewhat short of breath, and tired after trekking through Walmart. I also needed a restroom break, old bladders are demanding. I entered the SS office to be met by the rentacop on duty. He wanted to know if I had any "weapons". I told him that my Swiss Army knife...

Some N.C. police officers say they're concerned about a new state law that allows private dog handlers to conduct drug searches for businesses. The law, which the General Assembly approved last year and takes effect in October, lets private dog handlers register with the state and establish a commercial detection service.Supporters of the new law say the private services can help employers maintain a drug-free workplace, but critics say only sworn officers should be allowed to search for drugs because of legal issues."This is a bad idea," said Eldon Presnell, president of the U.S. Canine Association for North and South Carolina.Presnell,...
