DAVIS, Calif. -- A University of California, Davis freshman was in custody early Thursday after the discovery of bomb-making materials forced hundreds of students to evacuate their campus dormitories. Fire officials said several potentially dangerous chemicals were found in a dorm room, but the items had not yet been assembled into an explosive device, Sacramento TV station KCRA reported. "At this point, the bomb squad has set up a plan to remove the materials in a safe manner," said Paul Pfotenhauer, a fire spokesman for UC Davis, shortly after 8 a.m. PST. Danone revealed yesterday that five containers of its Evian bottled water have been detained in China after failing quality control testing. The containers, which held 115 tonnes of water, failed quality testing by Shanghai's entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in February, the company said. The water was denied entry over concerns that the amount of microbial flora present in the products exceeded 's maximum allowance, the company said in a press release. Microbial flora is bacteria, present within bottled water as part of its natural formulation. The announcement highlights the discrepancy in standards and regulations between China and its major trade partners like the US and...

We've all heard the complaint that politicians can be fair weather and change their minds depending on which way the political wind is blowing. But this week, weather and politics came together in a most peculiar way in Sacramento. First, the governor, by executive order, decreed that the state will have new standards for low-carbon motor vehicle fuel to help combat global warming. Then he announced as part of his State of the State that he wants to build two new dams because Sierra snowpack runoff is happening earlier in the year. Why? Global warming. This, of course, all happened...

Jet scare over Asian men 'helps terrorists' By Sally Pook (Filed: 21/08/2006) An airline yesterday stood by its decision to remove two Asian men from a holiday jet bound for Britain despite criticism from a Muslim group. The two passengers were asked to leave Monarch flight ZB613 from Malaga to Manchester, apparently because other passengers became alarmed that the men were wearing heavy clothing and kept checking their watches. Cabin crew informed the Spanish authorities of the passengers' fears and the men were taken off the flight. One of the passengers told a Sunday newspaper: "Some of the older children,...

US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says the United States is preparing for a likely outbreak of avian flu and assured consumers that poultry remains safe to eat. "There is no way to put a big cage around the United States. I think it is fair to assume we'll deal with ... avian influenza," said Johanns, who was attending a pork producers' meeting in Kansas City. "We could see it in domestic flocks as well as (wild) birds." The H5N1 bird flu virus has killed birds in more than 30 countries in the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa. It has...

Back in 2003, netwmd.com spearheaded an effort to oppose the Palestinian Solidarity Movement's (PSM) "conference" at Ohio State University (OSU). Despite the fact that the PSM is basically a group of pro-Palestinian terrorist supporters and enablers, Ohio’s “mainstream” Jewish community, including the Ohio State Hillel, did nothing to oppose the 2003 hate fest at OSU – this is even after repeated requests on my part for their assistance. [1] Yesterday, I received a form letter from Hillel decrying the PSM, and asking for money to “help Jewish students respond to the one-sided, anti-Israeli propaganda of the Palestinian Solidarity Movement on...

Sen. Barbara Boxer says women will die President Bush nominates a pro-life judge to the Supreme Court. Five thousand women a year will die if President Bush nominates a pro-life judge to the Supreme Court — that's the claim of liberal U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. And it's just a sample of the ramped-up rhetoric you can expect as Bush prepares to nominate a replacement for the retiring Sandra Day O'Connor. Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said Boxer's claim of 5,000 deaths, made to an Associated Press reporter, pure fantasy. "Senator Boxer's reliance on...
