Gibraltar finally joined the official list of British cities on Monday (Aug 29), after 180 years in which its status, granted by Queen Victoria, had been overlooked due to an administrative error. The British overseas territory bid to become a city earlier this year as part of the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, but research in the National Archives established it had in fact been granted city status in 1842. "It is excellent to see official recognition given to the City of Gibraltar, a huge accolade to its rich history and dynamism," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in...

In denouncing Republicans as "scared of widows and orphans," and castigating those who prefer Christian refugees to Muslims coming to America, Barack Obama has come off as petulant and unpresidential. Clearly, he is upset. And with good reason. He grossly, transparently underestimated the ability of ISIS, the "JV" team, to strike outside the caliphate into the heart of the West, and has egg all over his face. More critically, the liberal world order he has been preaching and predicting is receding before our eyes. Suddenly, his rhetoric is discordantly out of touch with reality. And, for his time on the...

The German government proposed measures Wednesday to tighten migration regulations for citizens from elsewhere in the European Union amid accusations of welfare abuse by poor immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania. Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet was proposing a six-month limit on EU citizens staying in the country, which is Europe’s biggest economy, without a job. In addition, he said EU citizens suspected of having abused Germany’s welfare system can be banned from re-entering the country. “Freedom of movement is an essential part of the European integration, which we fully stand behind,” de Maiziere told reporters...

  • Criminals exploiting EU travel freedoms, Dutch data shows

Fresh data from Dutch police shows how irregular migrants and criminals exploit the EU’s passport-free borders. Under the rules of the so-called Schengen Area, which covers all EU countries except Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the UK, people still have to carry some form of ID and national police can still do spot-checks, so long as the European Commission does not think they amount to systematic border control. For their part, Dutch police regularly go on buses or trains crossing the Belgian and German borders to demand papers, in a practice that surprises some travelers. From last August, Dutch police...
