'Shameless' parents not teaching skills By James Kirkup Political Correspondent Last Updated: 4:04AM BST 14/05/2008 A generation of young Britons are growing up in "shameless" families where parents lack the basic skills to raise their children, the Conservatives will warn today. Chris Grayling, the shadow work and pensions secretary, will claim that in some parts of the country there is no culture of parents instilling discipline and respect in their offspring. He will tell a London think tank that multiple generations of teenage parents mean that some of today's children have no exposure to elder relatives with traditional experience of...

The BBC kept more than £100,000 viewers had pledged to charity for itself. Staff knowingly withheld money that should have gone to causes including Children in Need and Comic Relief. In another hammer blow to TV's reputation, the corporation has been ordered by its own ruling body, the BBC Trust, to apologise for the scandal on air. Last night it also faced accusations from charities that its behaviour was immoral and disgraceful. News of the racket came 24 hours after ITV was fined £5.7million for conning £8million from telephone voters to top-rated shows. It also emerged that a British Comedy...

HARLAN, Iowa -- From his days of campaigning in Downstate Illinois, Sen. Barack Obama has been asked plenty of times about his views on gun ownership. But the Illinois Democrat and presidential candidate added a new wrinkle Saturday night while campaigning in conservative-leaning western Iowa, when he said his Chicago-native wife, Michelle, recently commented that she could see why rural folks might want to own guns. Here was Obama's discussion of gun ownership and his wife's thoughts during a campaign stop at a middle school: --snip-- "And by the way, Michelle, my wife, she was traveling up, I think, in...

Former president Bill Clinton angrily defended his administration's counterterrorism record during a Fox News interview to be aired today, while accusing "President Bush's neocons" and other Republicans of ignoring Osama bin Laden until the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Clinton had planned to discuss his climate change initiative during his appearance on "Fox News Sunday," but he turned combative after host Chris Wallace asked why he hadn't "put bin Laden and al-Qaeda out of business." Clinton shot back that "all the conservative Republicans" who now criticize him for inattention to bin Laden used to criticize him for over-attention to bin...

WILLIAM Jefferson Blythe III was born on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Ark. After his mother remarried, he took the family surname, Clinton. Clinton was a good student. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and even considered a professional musical career. While in high school, a fortuitous meeting with President John Kennedy led him to choose a life of public service.

The story of this nation has been collectively written by the immigrant pen. Titled “The American Dream,” this wildly successful and popular tale is about to gain a new author. Yet instead of simply writing the next verse, this wave of immigrant authors seems intent on starting a new book. There is no longer satisfaction with building for the future; an entitlement culture has grown. This contemporary tale is to be authored by illegal immigrants, but the pen, paper, and publishing are paid for by the American taxpayer. Not offended yet? Soon. When reading this piece, remember that the term...

With issues such as the Iraq war and terrorism ranking as high priorities for most voters, Democratic officials have spent much of the past two weeks trying to persuade the press and the public that they are better-equipped to deal with national security and military veterans than the Bush administration and the Republican Party. The newest effort to burnish the party’s credentials on these issues came Wednesday, when the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announced the establishment of a veterans council — designed to foster a closer political relationship between the Democratic Party, military veterans and their families. The effort, known...

In the Fox News Channel Senator George Allen blasted the Democrats as shameless, bereft of ideas and rejected Harry Reid's apology for trying to taint 33 GOP Senators in the Abramoff Scandal. Senator Allen, a possible contender for the White House in 2008 ripped the "playbook" of the Democrats in the upcoming elections as scurrilous and beneath contempt since they have no new ideas to offer the American people. At the same time he gave little credibility to Osama Bin Laden's latest audiotape threatenig America as "old news".

BANGOR, Maine --Former President Bill Clinton surprised U.S. troops arriving from Iraq when a refueling stop at the Bangor International Airport coincided with the arrival of two chartered flights carrying soldiers. Clinton was returning Monday night from Paris where he had met with French President Jacques Chirac to discuss plans for his charitable organization, the Clinton Foundation. I just finished reading another amazing novel by Dean Koontz, "Cold Fire". The afterword ... is hilarious: "Then, as is often the case when life is good, someone said, 'Hey, let's make a movie!' and life got strange, dark, and scary. "By this I do not mean to imply - although I can't stop you from inferring - that a lot of movie-industry executives are as brainless, voracious, and destructive as the flesh-eating bacteria ... I've met smart, fair, creative executives over the years...although I've noticed their kind either eventually get fired," (NOTE TO SELF: KELLY GOODE!!!) ... He goes...

Heck, if the government really is going to spend $200 billion to rebuild New Orleans, they might as well rebuild it as the city of tomorrrow complete with kelp farms, electricity generated by tides, public transportation light as a cloud and efficient and almost noiseless, parks that are nice and safe and clean. It could be a proof-of-concept city for all those innovations you see in the middle of "Popular Science" that are always "just around the corner." I draw the line at dog-walking robots and the bubble dome (for now), but you get my drift, I suppose. Well, I...

The odious Keith Olberman is on PMSnbc floating the idea that Bush is neglecting Mississippi by directing so many resources to New Orleans, which is empty. I detect this is the latest media shift. Now that Bush has NO largely in hand and it has been an amazing success, they are going to shift focus to Mississippi and say Bush screwed over Mississippi and the relief effort is being bungled there and all. Moral of the story-- the liberal media are evil M effers and Republicans never get a fair break in the MSM.

Yet in the wreckage of Pat and Cindy Sheehan's marriage there is surely a lesson for the Democratic Party. As Cindy says, they're both Democrats, but she's "more liberal" and "more radicalized." There are a lot of less liberal and less radicalized Dems out there: They're soft-left-ish on health care and the environment and education and so forth; many have doubts about the war, but they love their country, they have family in the military, and they don't believe in dishonoring American soldiers to make a political point. The problem for the Democratic Party is that the Cindys are now...

She's shameless, but they are more so. This morning, the "ladies" of "The View" pretended to play employment agency with a soldier who served in Iraq and helped catch Saddam Hussein. On June 6, 1994, Bill Clinton visited Normandy for the 50th anniversary of the invasion. If you recall, Clinton was very nervous about military issues early in his presidency. In fact, he was so ill at ease around military men that he wanted to end the tradition of the President saluting soldiers as he gets on and off his helicopter. A 'salute coach' was brought in to teach the boy genius how its done. It is easy to understand Clinton's hesitancy, after all, he famously wrote back in 1969 that he 'loathed the military'. During his 1994 visit to...

Knoll & Rendell: Disgraceful remarks Tuesday, July 26, 2005 Sometimes politicians need to stop while they're behind. Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll did a little politicking and offered some political commentary Tuesday last, uninvited, at the Carnegie funeral of Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich. The Marine, 32, of Westwood, was killed in a mortar attack in Iraq on July 10. Mrs. Baker Knoll began talking to Sgt. Goodrich's aunt during the Communion service. She handed the aunt a business card; Knoll called the funeral a "function." Then Knoll told the aunt that the state government was "against the war." Outrageous. Visiting...

Rendell said he hadn't spoken with Knoll about the incident, but was disturbed by the family's...

Hands out business card, tells family 'our government is against this war' When the family of Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich gathered in Pittsburgh for the fallen Marine's funeral, they expected a large crowd – after all, they've lived in the area for generations and Joseph had been a police officer before becoming a leatherneck – but they didn't expect to see Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor show up, hand out her business card and tell them "our government" opposes the war. No Name Calling Week? 1/12/2005By Warren Throckmorton, Ph.D.Yes, name-calling is wrong. Saturday is not normally the worst day of the week to read the New York Times. On Friday, one has to suffer through Paul Krugman's screeds blaming all the world's ills except for the tsunami on President Bush. Sunday brings Maureen Dowd and her special keyboard where R has been replaced by Rummy, and Frank Rich blasting the intolerant God believers in the red states. But Saturday, the week's lowest circulation day, includes a column by David Brooks, the conservative that liberals dislike the least. So when Mark Dayton tells you that you need to sit back, close your eyes, and find your happy place, you can be sure he knows of what he speaks. I have a hypothetical question: should Matt Drudge replace Dan Rather? I realize those would be rather small shoes to fill (hah!) considering Dan is what, 5' 2"? If not, why not? If so, what would have to change to make something like this even remotely possible? And finally, would Drudge have to cut back on posting articles about three-headed chickens and monster hurricanes to take the top spot? Or would we now see him out there in a rain slicker next hurricane season, lashed to a lamppost and interviewing a two-headed calf about the prospects for surviving the storm?
