CHARLESTON (AP) -- Hundreds of machine gun owners plan to meet at a remote, abandoned strip-mine site near Shinnston this weekend to shoot their weapons. ''We call it 'Thunder in the Hills,' '' said Frank Watson, the event's promoter. ''Basically, it's a chance for machine gun owners to spend three days shooting lead and shooting the bull.'' Billed as a ''shoot and show,'' the event is open to owners of all types of automatic firearms. Military buffs will get a chance to see everything from the British-made Lewis gun of World War I to the M-60 now used by the...

It's not every day that presidential candidates take up arms as part of their campaigns, but that's what happened April 28, when two candidates for the Libertarian Party's nomination for president had a "shoot-out" in Dallas, Texas. Michael Badnarik and Gary Nolan, two of the leading candidates for the LP presidential nomination, had a shooting match as a fundraiser for ballot access in Texas -- where the LP must gather 45,540 valid signatures to get on the ballot across the state in November. The event raised some money for the ballot access effort, with about 30 people showing up to...

I HATE APRIL FOOLS day... It's the one day out of the year I've learned to not read any website ever... from Drudge, to my tinfoil favorite Art Bell... though I guess it's just Coast to Coast now... I don't trust anyone when it's the 1st of april. Information gathering crawls to a halt... etc. etc. etc. So, in response to April Fools Day, I'm gonna spend all day in my cubicle and play BUSH SHOOT OUT! If you haven't played it you should. It's a nice relaxing way to spend a day when the internet is so full of...

RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - Lifelong rancher Charlie Jaure has seen cattle lose parts of their tails to the cold on occasion. He'd never seen them bitten off by wolves. That is, until shortly after Christmas, when Jaure lost two of his cattle to wolves north of Wamsutter. Another two were hurt badly and up to a dozen lost their tails, he said. ''I thought maybe they froze their tails,'' Jaure said. ''I got to looking, and it was all at the top of the tail.'' His wife, Kathleen, said the bones were left crushed and mangled. ''We're messing with a...

OK folks, here it is... everyone's favorite... an "I need FReeper opinions on a new gun" thread! Hooray! Here's the lowdown: I have $1,200 and I think I'm going to blow it on a new rifle. From the bit of looking into it his will be what folks call a "battle rifle". I'm thinking about .223 or .308 but I'm certainly open to other suggestions. I really can't spend anything over $1,200 even though I would like to. I can't get too crazy here. Any suggestions you would have, are greatly appreciated. I know everyone loves a good "gun thread"!...

A row has broken out in Australia's Queensland state following reports that police there used photographs of real-life people, including Aborigines, during target practice. The police minister in the northeastern state, Tony McGrady, has ordered an inquiry after the Channel Seven television report. The broadcaster said Queensland's counter-terrorism squad used 28 pictures or mug shots, including those of two Aborigines, in training exercises. Civil rights activists reacted with outrage but police maintained they had done nothing wrong. "It's absolutely disgraceful in that it reinforces prejudices," said Cameron Murphy, secretary of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties. "We've got a serious...

New evidence suggests that a war crime may have taken place in Baghdad on April 8. That morning, Taras Protsyuk, a Ukraine-born cameraman employed by Reuters, was standing on the 15th-floor balcony of the Palestine Hotel. José Couso, an employee of the Spanish news company Telcinco, was filming from a balcony one floor below. Suddenly a U.S. tank less than a mile away fired a single round at the hotel, hitting the 15th-floor balcony. Protsyuk was found lying on his back, unconscious. Couso was hit by debris. Both died soon afterward. Now, Couso's relatives have asked a judge to extradite...

AGHDAD, Iraq, May 13 — United States military forces in Iraq will have the authority to shoot looters on sight under a tough new security setup that will include hiring more police officers and banning ranking members of the Baath Party from public service, American officials said today. The far more muscular approach to bringing order to postwar Iraq was described by the new American administrator, L. Paul Bremer, at a meeting of senior staff members today, the officials said. On Wednesday, Mr. Bremer is expected to meet with the leaders of Iraqi political groups that are seeking to form...
