Mike Meehan’s response to the reaction to the BillboardsI’m truly sorry if these billboards have offended some of you. My purpose was not to hurt anyone, but rather remind us seriously of what we are challenged with and make us rethink. The billboards are big but the bigger picture I’m conveying is that the security of our nation as well as our economic future is going to be determined by whether we have a democrat or a republican president. It has basically come to this and it’s not complicated. Let’s be honest of where we’re at in these times and...

The "Musicians Who Turn 50", "Musicians Who Turn 60", "Favorite Drummer" and "Favorite Guitarist" were such hit threads on FR, I've decided to do this one. Who is your favorite SONGWRITING DUO? We all know that Lennon-McCartney were amazing together and possibly the best songwriting duo ever. They might be mentioned several times on this thread. If you choose John & Paul, be specific about which song and lyric(s).

It's not as though Nasa is beaming out the Cheeky Girls back catalogue or the collected works of Florence Foster Jenkins. Nevertheless, scientists warn that transmitting songs into deep space could put the Earth at risk of an alien attack. They voiced fears that advertising humanity's place in the universe - as happened last week when Nasa broadcast a Beatles track towards the North Star - could attract the attention of aliens who are less friendly than ET. Dr Douglas Vakoch of the SETI Institute, which has been leading the search for extraterrestrials, told New Scientist magazine: "Before sending out...

'Santa Claus Is Coming To Get Me': Mental health charity sparks outrage with spoof Christmas carolsLast updated at 14:19pm on 20th December 2007 Traditional: But Christmas carols were given a radical make-over by a health trust in Salford A bad taste top ten of Christmas carols poking fun at mental illness has been slammed as "degrading" and "insensitive" after it was published with the backing of a social services department. The booklet contains a list titled "Christmas Carols for the Mentally Disturbed". It then names psychiatric conditions and suggests festive songs which would suit the illness. They include: Schizophrenia...

One Of Every Three Popular Songs Contains References To Substance Use ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2007) — Know what your kids are listening to when they’re blocking you out with their iPod earbuds firmly in place? If they are listening to popular music, chances are high that they are hearing references to substance use. According to new research presented at the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C., 33 percent of the most popular songs of 2005 portrayed substance use. The study, in which researchers analyzed 279 of the year’s most popular songs according to Billboard magazine,...

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc. is expanding its online music section to include the lyrics of 400,000 songs, hoping to strike a chord with Web surfers looking for a more reliable alternative to Internet sites that publish the words without the permission of the copyright owners. The Sunnyvale-based company is touting the free service to be unveiled Tuesday as the Web’s largest legally licensed database of lyrics.“It fills a huge, gaping hole out there,” said Ian Rogers, general manager of Yahoo music. Song lyrics have been available through scores of other Web sites for years, but most of those destinations are...

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- The holiday classics haven't changed that much -- radio stations still turn to Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Burl Ives to spread yuletide cheer. But your chances of hearing them on the radio are growing fast. As of Monday, 399 stations from Maine to Hawaii were playing Christmas tunes around the clock to bring in listeners and advertising dollars. Portland has two stations competing over holiday listeners, and some cities have as many as five or six. Most of the programming kicked off after Thanksgiving; the earliest station made the switch in October before trick...

A bit ago, I heard Roger Hedgecock, filling in for Rush, say that "The Twelve Days of Christmas" should be put in the tradsh bin, or words to that effect. I'll freely admit that I could live the rest of my life without "The Little Drummer boy." I agree with Dave Barry's comment that it's a song "that consists entirely fo people standing around saying 'Pum.'" What Christmas songs would you like not to hear again?

Always: A singer’s journey through the life of Irving Berlinhttp://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1998/7/1998_7_74.shtml http://tinyurl.com/mnk6m American Heritage Magazine November 1998 Volume 49, Issue 7 BY SUSANNA McCORKLE Like most baby boomers, I grew up hearing his songs and taking them for granted. I never gave a thought to who Irving Berlin was or how he had come to write the music that flowed through our lives. In the 1970s I saw a newspaper photograph of him singing “God Bless America” in the Nixon White House during Watergate and immediately consigned both him and the song to the “wrong” side. When I became a singer...

Degrading lyrics lead to early sex, study says Monday, August 07, 2006 By , Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Common sense says exposing children to sexually degrading song lyrics cannot be a good thing. Now, a multiyear study of teen sexual behavior and listening habits, led by a researcher in Pittsburgh, is setting out to prove it scientifically. The Rand Corp. study, released today, shows that the more often teens listen to sexually degrading songs -- marked by obscenities and stereotypes of women as sex objects and men as sexual predators -- the likelier they are to have sex at an early age....

With songs like “When I Get Where I’m Going,” “Believe” and “Who You’d Be Today,” today’s country charts are filled with songs of faith and spirituality. Respected country music journalist Alanna Nash reports on this growing trend, where an historic number of songs about faith, healing and religion are scaling the charts. The success of Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which held the No. 1 spot for six weeks, proves that listeners are hungry for spiritually-themed songs. “Many fans tell me that ‘Jesus, Take the Wheel’ really means something to them,” says Carrie. “Once a couple of singers do...

May 22, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton doesn't need "Respect" - she's already got it at the top of her iPod playlist. The surprisingly tech-savvy Clinton mixes Aretha Franklin's 1967 landmark smash hit for the feminist movement into her playlist rotation alongside The Eagles' 1975 Top 5 hit, "Take It to the Limit" ("You know I've always been a dreamer"). In a New York minute, H-Rod can shuffle from the bad boys of rock 'n' roll to the Fab Four in her iPod's massive musical library. She told The Post her iPod has "got like 1,000" songs...

PASADENA, Calif. - Singer Kelly Clarkson, who vaulted to fame as the first "American Idol" winner in 2002, is not letting any of her songs be used by new contestants on the show. A spokesman for Clarkson insisted it's nothing personal, but the stance prompted a public scolding from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell. "I think that by ignoring the show you're ignoring the audience who put you there," Cowell said Tuesday. Clarkson has become a major star in the past year, with her hit "Since U Been Gone" earning both massive sales and critical respect, particularly from a rock...

The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics. The Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents US sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006. MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed. Guitar licks and song scores are widely available on the internet but are "completely illegal", he told the BBC. Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be...

http://www.townhall.com/phillysoc/bartlettpaper.htm Conservative Pop Music-- The Top 40 of the Top 40 Bruce Bartlett Full Text of Speech to be given at The Philadelphia Society Regional Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, September 21, 2002. Pop music is probably one of the last places a conservative would normally look for reinforcement of his worldview. Rock and roll, which has dominated pop music since the 1950s, is inexorably associated with liberalism in the minds of many conservatives. But in fact, there have been a significant number of songs on the pop charts during the rock era that are explicitly conservative. I have compiled a...

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A bid by Mexican police to polish their image backfired after youngsters at a police summer camp were filmed chanting that they had killed their dads and tossed their sisters into ditches. Mexican newspapers and TV carried reports on Thursday that children as young as 6 were taught to belt out the lurid marching song at an elite federal police youth camp for up to 3,000 kids near Mexico City. "I never had a father, and now I never will, the only one I had, I killed," the grinning youngsters chanted in the clip shot at...

“It’s a mighty thin line between certain kinds of country and classic rhythm and blues. Look at John Hiatt. Or Bonnie Raitt. Or Chris Webster. The singer/songwriter from Davis, California (known to many as one of the dynamic singers in the NorCal eclectic septet Mumbo Gumbo) blends the two styles in a way that has distanced her from the country mainstream but endeared her to fans of soulful singing. Webster’s is an authoritative voice that manages to make existential angst, romantic confusion and spiritual longing sound uncommonly appealing. Each note she sings conveys a probing, acute sensitivity to the little...

Some Americans must be living in fear that the Tooth Fairy is going to force them to believe in her. I am convinced they must live in mortal terror that the Easter Bunny is going to hop into their homes and force them to color hardboild eggs turning their homes into some multicolored slave labor camp. Perhaps they are worried beyond measure that a Leprechaun will take away their freedom and cast them in an ocean of bad green beer and make them wear funny green bowler hats everywhere they go. I would posit that this fear laden segment of...

2004 gave us songs about the Iraqi war, milkshakes, and, uh, apologizing to a girlfriend about having a baby with another woman. One December a few years back, I was in Santa Claus, Indiana, and went to the Post Office - a popular destination thanks to its seasonal postmark. "Merry Christmas!" I said provocatively. But Postmistress Sandy Colyon was ready for me. "A week ago," she said, "I'd have had to say 'Happy Holidays', but we've been given a special dispensation from the Postmaster-General allowing us to say 'Merry Christmas'. So Merry Christmas!" That's "Christmas" at the dawn of the third millennium - a word you have to get a special memo from head office authorising the use thereof. In America, most...

WASHINGTON — The song that defines Halloween for many — “Monster Mash” — is being brought back to life today with the help of the original recording artist. The new song — “Monster Slash” — was recorded by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, the co-creator of the 1962 hit “Monster Mash” and also the vocalist on the original recording. “Our goal here is to make sure that people understand that the scariest thing to happen to our forests in a long time,” said CPAL Director Peter Altman, “is the Bush administration’s plan to surrender vast quantities of virgin wilderness areas to the...

Given what I had written about them, I had no right to expect my lunch companions to be friendly. But apart from one fraught moment (of which more later), the spokesmen for the international music industry were perfectly amicable. I had written several columns and editorials arguing that the internet had deprived the record companies of their purpose, that the bullying of teenagers who downloaded free music smacked of desperation and that the industry's only hope of survival was finding a new business model. Determined to convince me that I was wrong were Jay Berman, chairman of the International Federation...
