On February 2 1943, German Field Marshal Paulus, his forces battered and surrounded by superior Russian forces, surrenders the 6th Army at Stalingrad. Days earlier, the Russians had captured the main German airfields at Pitomnik and Gumbrak, cutting off any possibility of resupply to the 6th Army. It was estimated that anywhere from 91000 to 110000 German soldiers (and 22 generals) surrendered. They were sent to labor camps and many died of disease or malnutrition. The last prisoners were released in 1955.
