On February 2 1943, German Field Marshal Paulus, his forces battered and surrounded by superior Russian forces, surrenders the 6th Army at Stalingrad. Days earlier, the Russians had captured the main German airfields at Pitomnik and Gumbrak, cutting off any possibility of resupply to the 6th Army. It was estimated that anywhere from 91000 to 110000 German soldiers (and 22 generals) surrendered. They were sent to labor camps and many died of disease or malnutrition. The last prisoners were released in 1955.

It is time for the American Army to withdraw from Iraq. Like the German Sixth Army, a few months before its annihilation at the decisive World War II battle of Stalingrad, U.S. forces now find themselves locked in an urban battle with a highly motivated local defender while depending upon an increasingly vulnerable supply line. This is a recipe for disaster. The war is lost for America. It need not have been, but now it is. Like the Germans at Stalingrad, the Americans have frittered away their strategic advantages and now fight with the initiative ceded to the enemy. Just...

Fifty Years Later, Russians Regard Stalin Positively March 4, 2006 (Angus Reid Global Scan) – Many adults in Russia think the tenure of one of the most notorious Soviet leaders was beneficial, according to a poll by the Public Opinion Foundation. 47 per cent of respondents believe Josef Stalin played a positive role in the country’s history. Stalin was the second leader of the Soviet Union, taking over after the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924. Stalin was responsible for a series of repressive campaigns—known as the Great Purge—during the 1930s. During his tenure, Stalin eliminated all possible political opposition...

WASHINGTON Feb 27, 2006 (AP)-- Eleven cities have shown interest in playing host to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, twice the number of cities that applied to get the 2004 gathering. The DNC initially sent out letters to more than 30 cities, giving them an overview and finding out their level of interest. The 11 cities that said they were interested: Anaheim, Calif.; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Las Vegas; Minneapolis; New Orleans; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix and San Antonio. Ghosts of Stalingrad still haunt site of epic World War II battle Thu May 5,2005 Volgograd may have been rebuilt from scratch after 1945, but the city once called Stalingrad is still haunted by the ghosts of World War II's watershed battle which saw Nazi Germany's first crushing defeat. "The whole city is a memorial," said Mikhail Godun, a young fireman who spends much of his free time digging up the remains of those who fell during the brutal, 200-day clash. What was arguably the mother of all World War II battles -- and Soviet victories -- claimed the lives...

The hot summer of 1942. Thousands of Soviet troops were retreating in confusion amid huge clouds of dust. Air space was dominated by German “Junkers” dive-bombers and “Messerschmitt” fighters. The impression was that of chaos, total confusion and the worst moments of 1941, when Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union. Military archives still have quite a few sternly-worded cabled demands by the then Soviet leader Joseph Stalin that the army group commanders should check the troop retreat, bring order out of chaos, fight to the last ditch and not to withdraw from the positions held. Stalin is fed up with...

MOSCOW, April 7 (Pyotr DUNAYEV, a war historian, retired colonel and World War II veteran, for RIA Novosti) - It was the last radiogram Paulus' staff received from Hitler. Chief of staff R. Schmidt handed it to Paulus saying: "Congratulations! You are General Field Marshal." Paulus was emotionless. The condition of his army group in Stalingrad was fatal. The staff located in the basement of a local department store was blocked, communication with German troops was lost and the snow-covered square was heaped up with bodies of dead German soldiers swarming with lice. I met veteran of the Battle of...

MOSCOW - The city formerly known as Stalingrad will erect a monument to Josef Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill to honor their historic Yalta conference in 1945, the city's mayor said Thursday. AP Photo Volgograd Mayor Yevgeny Ishchenko also said his city is considering changing some street names in honor of the Battle of Stalingrad, which is widely considered a turning point in World War II. "We are talking about eternalizing the leaders of world powers, the powers that won in that war, about eternalizing a historic event," Ishchenko said. It Will Be the Death of Liberalism Written by Raymond Kraft Sunday, October 10, 2004 It Will Be the Death of Liberalism Sixty-three years ago, Nazi Germany had overrun almost all of Europe and hammered England to the verge of bankruptcy and defeat, and had sunk more than four hundred British ships in their convoys between England and America for food and war materials. Bushido Japan had overrun most of Asia, beginning in 1928, killing millions of civilians throughout China, and impressing millions more as slave labor. The United States was in an isolationist and pacifist mood, and most Americans...

MOSCOW -- President Vladimir Putin on Friday ordered that the name of Volgograd be removed from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and replaced with the city's previous name, Stalingrad. The measure echoes other symbolic decisions Putin has made in recent years, including resurrecting the music of the old Soviet national anthem and reinstating the Soviet-era red star as the Russian military's emblem. The move is aimed at "commemorating the fundamental turning point" of World War II, Putin said in the order. The battle that ended on Feb. 2, 1943, with German Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus' surrender, killed about 1...

Fallujah will be your Stalingrad, Americans told By Toby Harnden in Fallujah (Filed: 26/04/2004) On the dusty road to the Jordanian Hospital on the edge of besieged Fallujah a skull and crossbones flew defiantly from the bonnet of a US military Humvee yesterday as preparations were made for a renewed offensive. America's senior general described the city as a "huge rats' nest", while Col John Coleman, a US marine commander in Fallujah, suggested that it was a "centre of gravity" in the war against terrorism. A column of American marine vehicles at a base near Fallujah "As Fallujah goes, so...

14:41 2004-02-02 61st anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad Today Russia marks the 61st anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi at Stalingrad. Stalingrad, which is located in the southeastern Russia on the Volga river, has become a symbol of Soviet heroism during the Second World War. The Soviet command was given and accomplished the task of preventing the Germans from crossing the Volga and advancing further into Russia. In February 1943, Nazi troops sustained their first big defeat. The Battle of Stalingrad signified a radical change in the war. Before that battle, Hitler's army was on the offensive, but...

Veterans of one of history's bloodiest battles meet and remember after 60 years. Ben Aris reports from Volgograd In the snow and icy winds of the midwinter Russian steppe, German veterans of the battle of Stalingrad returned to the scene of their defeat 60 years ago. Past enmities were forgotten as the men, most of them in their 80s, were reunited with their former opponents in the Red Army and talked of the hardships both sides went through. The battle began in August and Hitler assumed that the city would fall within a few weeks, so the German 6th Army...

The battle for Stalingrad was a fight like none he or anyone else had ever seen.
