A group of Indian gambling tribes has bought nearly $1 million in television time for the Republican candidate for state controller with two weeks to go in a close contest. Tony Strickland, a former member of the state Assembly known for being outspoken on his conservative views, received the boost Monday from Team 2006, an independent campaign committee formed by six Southern California gambling tribes that have been seeking to expand their operations. SACRAMENTO (AP) - In a report triggered by questionable campaign donations to Kevin Shelley, the controller's office said Wednesday it found serious weaknesses in the Department of Parks and Recreation's handing of state grants for local projects. The office's auditors looked at recipients of 20 grants totaling $14.26 million and questioned $1.11 million of the expenditures. SACRAMENTO (AP) - With $838 million invested in nine global automakers, the California Public Employees Retirement System should press harder for curbs on vehicles' greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming, state Controller Steve Westly said Monday.
