The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data finding the monkeypox outbreak is concentrated among men who have had sex with several men, and issued more detailed recommendations on how to avoid exposure to the disease. Among 291 men surveyed, 40% reported that they had two to four partners and 14% reported five to nine partners in the three weeks before developing monkeypox, according to the report. About 19% reported 10 or more partners during that period, the CDC said Friday. And among 86 men who reported information, 28% said they had had group sex, which is defined as...

The World Health Organization on Wednesday recommended that gay and bisexual men limit their number of sexual partners to protect themselves from monkeypox and help slow transmission of the rapidly spreading virus. The WHO’s monkeypox expert, Rosamund Lewis, said men who have sex with men are the group at the highest risk of infection right now. About 99% of cases are among men, and at least 95% of those patients are men who have sex with men, Lewis said. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it is crucial for public health authorities to engage communities of men who have sex...

… Monkeypox, which causes a rash and fever and is fatal in a very small percentage of cases, isn’t nearly as transmissible as Covid-19. But unlike the novel coronavirus, it spreads easily to and from certain animal populations — rodents in particular. If the pox currently circulating in the U.S. spreads to rats, hamsters, or gerbils, and becomes endemic in those species, there might be no easy way to contain it. “I do share the other scientists’ concern of containment and the virus becoming endemic in our U.S. rodent population,” sys Stephanie James, the head of a viral testing lab...

Whenever it seems like this country can’t possibly sink any lower, we always seem to find a way to top ourselves. That means one person is being diagnosed with an STI every 70 seconds.

Sexual risk behaviors appear to be a large driver of novel syphilis infections among men who have sex with men, or MSM, who are HIV-positive and have had prior episodes of syphilis infection. Experts say that access to sexual encounters and increased testing – and, therefore, greater awareness of those who are infected – may also be contributing to increases in repeat episodes. “Syphilis is re-emerging globally in general and HIV-infected populations and repeated syphilis episodes may play a central role in syphilis transmission among core groups,” Manuel Battegay, MD, professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology...
