Wal-Mart Drops Gun Sales in Some Stores Friday, April 14, 2006 CHICAGO — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) has decided to stop selling guns in about a third of its U.S. stores in what it calls a marketing decision based on lack of demand in some places, a company spokeswoman said Friday. The world's largest retailer decided last month to remove firearms from about 1,000 stores in favor of stocking other sporting goods, in line with a "Store of the Community" strategy for boosting sales by paying closer attention to local differences in demand. "This decision is based on diminished customer...

Businesses face wrath for supporting a cause By Jennifer Davies UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER December 20, 2005 Businesses want to make money, not waves. But today, that's no easy feat. Want to market your product to the gay community? That could raise the ire of conservative religious organizations. Want to back out? The gay community's clout will give you a different headache. Like it or not, the culture wars that have cleaved the country and created red states and blue states now have hit corporate America. Companies are being forced to choose sides in disputes they would rather avoid.

Largely ignored, Puritan laws like 'Common Day of Rest' revisited for the holidays... When Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly warned retailers that they would face prosecution if their doors opened on Thanksgiving, he was citing a nearly 400-year-old-law, penned by Puritans trying to enforce their idea of order on the dark shores of the New World. And as the year-end holiday approaches, authorities are watching for any supermarkets or department stores that try to do business on Christmas Day, citing the same timeworn legislation. This legal relic is part of legislation known as the blue laws: rarely enforced and largely...

Police have obtained warrants charging four other suspects with similar crimes and expect arrests soon. UNDER THE COVERS, CONSERVATIVE-STYLE By Azi Paybarah Two new books for the kiddies are hitting stores—one that will help get them laid, and another to turn those one-night-stand spawn into good little conservatives. First up is the long-awaited The O'Reilly Factor for Kids. Those with strong visual imaginations will doubtless be pleased to learn that O'Reilly (as he frequently refers to himself) didn't get laid until he was twenty. But it's about the children, and O'Reilly gives spin-free lessons about teenage sex, drugs, and what kind of junior high school girls turns him on. The Long Island native spills the...

Grocery options tied to obesity Study shows inner-city stores lack healthy foods By ERIC BERGER Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle The world is full of assumptions, such as money equals happiness. Some assumptions are true, some are not. In science, when a researcher decides to test an assumption, it becomes a hypothesis. The basis of all scientific experiment and observation is the testing of one or more hypotheses. This makes Galileo Galilei a real hero to scientists. For nearly two millennia after the height of classical Greece and the teachings of Aristotle, the basis of "science" was theory. Galileo — shockingly...

The supermarket chain Tesco has admitted testing controversial technology that tracks customers buying certain products through its stores. Anyone picking up Gillette Mach3 razor blades at its Cambridge store will have his or her picture taken. The Guardian, alerted by Katherine Albrecht, director of US-based Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy and Invasion and Numbering, to the use of the smart electronic tags, has found that tags in the razor blades trigger a CCTV camera when a packet is removed from the shelf. A second camera takes a picture at the checkout and security staff then compare the two images, raising the...

Some Knoxville Stores Have Extra Green Christmas December 26, 2002 By AMY RUTLEDGE 6 News Anchor/Reporter KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Analysts nationwide describe holiday sales this year as dismal, disappointing and the weakest in decades. But those analysts haven't been visiting any Knoxville malls. Despite the shorter shopping season and the recent windfall of negative sales outlooks, many Knoxville stores opened Thursday after enjoying the greenest Christmas in years. "Things have been great," says Norm Helterhoff, with Village Gifts. Norm's heard all the talk about how bad sales were expected to be this year. "I keep hearing that and I'm sure...

Just got info from wife who heard it at work from someone who talked to someone who knows. Wal-Mart is only putting crafts and Christmas items on sale today. Not much else on sale. Anyone have any other info on other stores like K-Mart, Target? Perhaps we can help each other target REAL sales when they happen. And, if sales WERE the lowest they've been in 30 years as the Washington Post story says...seems like the retailers would have big sales. However, from what I know (which is very little), they're not. Merry Christmas to all.
