Despite the public voting overwhelmingly in 2002 to term limit county commissioners, this Tuesday, the issue will be “workshopped” to get commissioners another four-year term. The workshop includes adding four years so that each commissioner can serve twelve consecutive years. Commissioners can only serve two consecutive terms for eight years currently. The commissioners can’t just change the law, but they can vote to put it on the ballot as a charter amendment with gobbledygook language designed to confuse the voters, so they get their way. This plot has been brewing for a while. The commission voted to have staff study...

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pushed back against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's rejection of a ban on members of Congress from trading and holding individual stock while in office. In a series of tweets on Friday evening, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated her prior opposition to members trading individual stock while in office, writing that the practice is inappropriate when members "write major policy and have access to sensitive information."

Dozens of federal lawmakers and at least 182 top staffers have violated a conflict-of-interest law. Numerous members of Congress personally invest in industries they oversee. Few face serious consequences, legally or otherwise. The nation is unabashedly polarized. Republicans and Democrats enjoy little goodwill and less commonality. But in Washington, DC, a bipartisan phenomenon is thriving. Numerous members of Congress, both liberal and conservative, are united in their demonstrated indifference toward a law designed to quash corruption and curb conflicts-of-interest. Insider's new investigative reporting project, "Conflicted Congress," chronicles the myriad ways members of the US House and Senate have eviscerated their...

On the eve of a public hearing, President Joe Biden’s commission released a series of reports on various proposals to reform the Supreme Court. The report appeared to reject the idea of expanding the court, receptive to term limits for justices, and proposed confronting the so-called “shadow docket” with increased transparency.Setting out explicitly to avoid “partisan conflict” and “polarization,” the commission disappointed many on the Democratic Party’s left flank by criticizing the idea of adding justices to the Supreme Court — a theory described as “expansion” by its supporters and “court packing” by its critics. Former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt...

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley announced in the wee hours of Friday that he intends to seek an eighth term in 2022. The 88-year-old Iowa Republican, who has been in the Senate since 1981, posted his plans on Twitter shortly after 4 a.m. CT, along with a video of him going out for his daily jog. "It’s 4 a.m. in Iowa so I’m running," Grassley wrote. "I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided. "I’m running for re-election—a lot more to do, for Iowa. We ask...

In this morning’s mail I received a fund raising request from Ted Cruz stating that he has officially introduced legislation to add a Term Limits Amendment to the Constitution. Now, I’ve been preaching term limits for about thirty years (see my tagline), so it definitely got my attention. BUT...this mailing is the first I’ve heard about the proposal. Have any other FReepers seen it reported?

How often at your workplace have you held your tongue out of fear of saying something that could get you fired? Everyone looks out for their interests. We naturally try to do that which best serves ourselves and our families. It is called human nature and it has served mankind well since the Creation. The people we send to government are no different. They can’t be different, for they are one of us, and as imperfect as the rest of mankind. First, we must understand that most of the chosen 535 members of congress had to claw, grasp, climb their...

The establishment GOP inside the Beltway spent much of 2014 discouraging Republicans from mounting primary challenges to sitting GOP lawmakers. In 2016, the Republican Party would be well-advised not to interfere in the race for Congress in Illinois 18th Congressional District. “Attorney Mark Zalcman, formerly a Chillicothe resident who now lives in Normal, announced Monday that he planned to seek the GOP nomination for the 18th Congressional District seat that Schock now holds, running on a platform centered on his Christian faith and values and using the slogan ‘Because Washington needs the Gospel,’” The Peoria Journal-Star reported. “He’s also an...

It would go like California does. They put one issue on the ballot and everyone running has to take a side-no nuances. Issue one would be voter ID. Issue 2 would be finish the wall. Issue 3 would be school choice(think Covid). Issue 4 would be eliminate the income tax. Prop 103 got voters off their dead behinds for the first time. Get enough states to get them on the ballot and the other states won't be able to ignore it.

In the year 1900, the median age of Americans at the age of death was 49 years old. In the year 2018, that figure had risen to above age 80. As our life spans increase, no one thinks beans about dementia-free septuagenarians running for president, and soon enough, an octogenarian, someone in his or her 80s, will run for president. That brings us to the issue of term limits. When the Founding Fathers first drafted the Constitution setting out the ground rules as to who could be a senator or congressional representative, they couldn't easily have foreseen the advanced life...

Sunday, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) called for term limits for federal government bureaucrats as a way to curb corruption and the growth of government during an appearance on FNC’s “The Next Revolution.” The Tennessee Republican U.S. Senator explained to Fox News Channel’s Steve Hilton such a move would be an effective way to “drain the swamp.” “It has been an incredible year, one that nobody anticipated,” she said. “And one of the things I think is so precise that you have just touched on is that Big Business, Big Government, Big Tech, Big Media — they all go hand in...

During a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Wednesday, President Trump spoke proudly about America’s accomplishments and future goals—including in space. He vowed to make the United States the first country to send an astronaut to Mars, suggesting perhaps it should be a woman, too. And while Republicans are eager to win back the House and get Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi out of the speakership, some apparently would like to see her off Earth altogether. “Make it Nancy Pelosi!” one rally attendee yelled back at the president. “Who said that? That’s pretty good! Stand up please, look at this...

Massachusetts Congressman Joe Kennedy III has announced his intention to file legislation next week that would introduce term limits for all future U.S. Supreme Court Justices. According to Congressman Kennedy's office, the bill would establish 18-year term limits on any Supreme Court Justices approved after its passage. After their 18-year terms, justices would then be allowed to continue their service on lower courts. Kennedy's bill would then create a regular appointment process to allow every president to nominate a new justice to he Supreme Court during each odd year, guaranteeing each president the opportunity to nominate two justices per four-year...

For years, Cai Xia, a former professor at China’s elite Central Party School, has watched the ruling Communist party decay from the inside. Now she is out. On Monday she was expelled from the party, two months after an audio recording of her describing the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, as a “mafia boss” was leaked online. In interview with the Guardian in June, Cai went even further in her denunciation of Xi, discussing what she considered to be his mistakes as a leader... Q: In your speech you said Xi forced through the amendment of China’s constitution to abolish term...

Today the average American is 20 years younger than their representative in Congress. This should come as no surprise, considering that over the past 30 years the average age of a Member of Congress has increased with almost every new Congress. In 1981, the average age of a Representative was 49 and the average of a Senator was 53. Today, the average age of a Representative is 57 and the average of a Senator is 61. This prompted us to take a further look at those graying averages. Democratic leaders in the House are two decades older than Republican leaders....

Facebook Twitter Pinterest Share0 Trump has voiced support for congressional term limits. During the 2016 presidential campaign that he would push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress. After he became President in 2018 he tweeted: I recently had a terrific meeting with a bipartisan group of freshman lawmakers who feel very strongly in favor of Congressional term limits. I gave them my full support and endorsement for their efforts. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/991028027785138177?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E991028027785138177&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rightjournalism.com%2Fvideo-president-trump-suggests-the-senate-should-pass-term-limits-for-his-presidency-of-25-years%2F Last night there was an interesting moment when he suggested that maybe the Senate should limit his presidency on 25 years so that he...

Convention of States Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster. What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention for proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington, DC. The Convention of States Project; a national effort...

Maggie and Libby knew Tom Steyer’s ad by heart: "I'm going to say two words that will make Washington insiders very uncomfortable: Term limits!" they recently chirped in unison at the dinner table. Unfortunately for Steyer, their votes can’t be bought — they’re 10 and 13. “It was like a comedy act,” the children’s father, Loren Foxx, said. “His ads are on constantly."
