Gov. David Dewhurst in the Republican pirmary for U.S. Senate. Dewhurst still leads with the backing of 38 percent of the respondents but the support for Cruz has increased to 26 percent in the crowded primary. The venue for the event was the Bayou Theater on the University of Houston’s Clear Lake Campus. The event was also streamed online so people could watch from the comfort of their home or office. The movement to draft Tommy Lee Jones to run as a Democrat to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison is most likely doomed to failure, but a new poll shows Jones might be a viable candidate. Public Policy Polling released its survey today on the 2012 Senate race, and it shows Jones with the best favorable/unfavorable combo among possible candidates. It also shows he is within range of two Republican candidates, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert, in head-to-head matchups. Dewhurst beats him 43-39 percent, and Leppert by only 38-37. "A Jones candidacy is probably a pipe dream...

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert said Friday that he would consider running in a special election for the U.S. Senate. "If the opportunity comes up...then I'll go ahead and look at it," Leppert said during a recording of Inside Texas Politics, which airs on WFAA-TV (Channel 8). It was Leppert's first public acknowledgment that he's pondering leaving the mayor's office to run for Senate. As he pointed out, he'd have that chance if Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, resigned her seat to focus solely on running for governor.

A funny thing happened to a pro-illegal immigrant activist this week in Dallas, Texas. The activist, a League of United Latin American Citizens representative named Jesse Diaz, was carjacked. Obviously there’s nothing funny about someone sticking a gun in another person’s face and stealing his car. This isn’t funny as in hardy-har-har. And everyone is relieved that Mr. Diaz wasn’t hurt by the punk who threatened his life and stole his vehicle in broad daylight. But the amusing part of this crime is what happened afterward.
