RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A recount Wednesday upheld Republican Bob McDonnell's narrow victory for attorney general in the closest statewide election in modern Virginia history. Democrat Creigh Deeds demanded the recount after the State Board of Elections certified McDonnell the winner by just 323 votes out of more than 1.9 million cast in the Nov. 8 election - a margin of 0.0166 of a percentage point. Deeds called McDonnell and congratulated him on the victory after preliminary recount results showed he could not overcome the margin. Deeds spokesman Mark Bergman said final numbers still were being tallied.

Republican Bob McDonnell once again declared victory in the Virginia attorney general’s race on Monday after the state Board of Elections certified the results of the Nov. 8 election. But Democrat Creigh Deeds immediately announced plans for a recount in the closest statewide election in modern Virginia history. McDonnell edged Democrat Creigh Deeds by a mere 323 votes – a margin of less than 0.01 percentage points. More than 1.94 million votes cast ballots in the contest. The elections board also certified the results in the races for governor, lieutenant governor and the House of Delegates. Democrat Tim Kaine was...

The State Board of Elections is expected today to certify Republican Robert F. McDonnell as the winner over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in the race for attorney general … Deeds is expected to cross the street to the Richmond Circuit Count and ask for a recount, as he is allowed to by law. … Attorney General Judith Williams Jagdmann announced that she has appointed two Washington lawyers with expertise in election law to assist her office in providing legal advice to the elections board for the recount. Republican Robert F. McDonnell declared victory yesterday in the cliffhanger race for state attorney general, but Democrat R. Creigh Deeds refused to concede and prepared for a recount battle in court. In probably the closest statewide election in Virginia's history, McDonnell said he had won by more than 1,500 votes of the almost 1.94 million votes cast. The State Board of Elections put his margin at 2,023; the Associated Press at 1,944. "I feel confident I'm the next attorney general of Virginia," he told reporters yesterday. But Deeds was defiant, arguing that "you have to wait until the votes are...

The attorney general race was so close we are looking at a recount no matter how it looks at first take (a GOP win). All GOP lawyers in Virginia, and neighboring states, should attend the local electoral boards' canvasses beginning today and tomorrow, to watch procedures, vote certifications, and note any unusual vote tabulation changes or inaccurate certifications, with any irregularities to be noted and communicated up the chain to the state party and so on. We need some good people for the potential process: even if they cannot attend tomorrow, we would encourage them to attend each day they...
