  • The Shabby, Sophomoric Behavior of Democrats at the SOTU

It is difficult to imagine a more galling demonstration of incivility than the Democrats in the room for Trump's SOTU speech. They scowled, frowned, and sat on their hands throughout the speech. They could hardly be bothered to acknowledge the heroes in the audience when they were introduced. While the Dems brought illegal immigrants, Trump invited actual paragons of American character and the families of victims of illegal immigrant crimes, as well as a victim of North Korea. It was embarrassing, like watching the anti-Semites in the UN stomp out of the room when Benjamin Netanyahu speaks. How is it any...
  • In a Perfect Metaphor for Socialism, Bernie Sanders' State of the Union Video Response Craps Out

Self-identified "national socialist" Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) couldn't let Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) speak for him in the Democratic response to Donald Trump's first State of the Union address. But, in a perfect metaphor for his economic system, Sanders' own response experienced "technical difficulties." For almost a full three minutes, Sanders' response was down, and the screen read, "We will be back momentarily!" "Well, as they say, technology is great when it works, so if you're still with us, we appreciate it very much," the socialist senator said when the video started again. So long as Sanders' team doesn't...

Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was captured losing her cool Thursday when confronted by a Greenpeace activist about the millions of dollars in direct and indirect donations she receives from the fossil fuel industry. “Regarding climate change, can we have your word that you’ll reject fossil fuel money in the future for your campaign?” Greenpeace “democracy organizer” Eva Resnick-Day asked. “I don’t have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies,” Clinton claimed, before bizarrely blaming her surging opponent, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who had nothing to do with the question. “I am so sick, I am so sick...

Gov. Phil Scott has signed Vermont's marijuana legalization bill into law. A Scott administration official tells WCAX the governor signed the bill shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. Scott is now the first governor in the country to sign marijuana legalization into law. Eight other states legalized marijuana through public referendums. In a letter to lawmakers, Scott said he signed the bill, H.511, with "mixed emotions." The bill allows Vermonters over the age of 21 to have an ounce of weed and to grow a few plants. Once signed, the new law goes into effect July 1.

Immigration and Customs and Enforcement raided a Days Inn hotel in Colchester last Thursday in the first sweep of migrant workers in Vermont. ICE detained 14 construction workers, according to Will Lambek of Migrant Justice, a group that supports undocumented workers. The raid was conducted at 5 a.m. on Jan. 18. Lambek said other construction workers who were not included in the sweep notified Migrant Justice. The migrants were working for a contracting firm in the area. Lambek did not release information about the company for fear of jeopardizing other workers. Lambek said the raid “was out of scale” for...

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that the United States would never recover from the “stain” of deporting young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, who are often called "Dreamers." During a Sunday show interview, Sanders said their deportations would be “one of the ugliest stains” in American history. “If we allow Trump to get away with what he did, and that is repeal the executive order on DACA, and if these 800,000 people, young people, are subjected to deportation, this will be one of the ugliest stains in the history of the United States,” Sanders told CNN’s...

On Sept. 19, Politico congressional reporter Burgess Everett tweeted that he suddenly “[Remembers Vermont has a Republican governor].” His tweet prompted Seung Min Kim, a fellow Politico reporter who covers the US Senate, to reply that she “[Learns Vermont has a Republican governor].” That, in turn, instigated a response by Wall Street Journal congressional reporter Byron Tau: “[Googles the name of Vermont’s Republican governor].” To which Phil Scott, Vermont’s Republican governor, responded that he “[Is Vermont’s Republican governor].” The moment was comical but also insightful, underscoring just how little Washington’s political class knows about who holds the executive power in...

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said opponents of the Republican tax reform plan did all they could to stop it and essentially conceded defeat before a vote scheduled for Tuesday. Sanders said on CBS’ “Face The Nation” there were too many forces opposing Democrats that they could not overcome. “We did everything that we could. But at the end of the day what you had is people like [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin, who is worth $300 to 400 million; the president of the United States, who is worth several billion dollars, as you mentioned; from four or five thousand lobbyists doing...

Three of President Trump's female accusers spoke with NBC's Megyn Kelly Monday about their experiences, all claiming he took advantage of them sexually. Former beauty pageant contestant Samntha Holvey alleged that Trump made her feel like "a piece of meat," Rachel Crooks, a former receptionist, claimed he forcibly kissed her, and Jessica Leeds, a traveling saleswoman, says he groped and kissed her on an airplane. The White House has dismissed them as "false claims," as Kelly reiterated on her show. These women's stories, however, were enough to convince Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) that the president needs to step down "immediately." Should...

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I-VT) dodged questions about allegations of sexual misconduct by former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Al Franken (D-MN). On Clinton, Sanders said, “I don’t think at this moment our goal is to look back 20 or 30 years. Our goal is to go forward. And our goal is to understand we have a real crisis in this country today—within the political world, within the corporate world, within the media world—where women are being harassed every single day. An effort by Vermont utility regulators to settle the long-standing, contentious issue of how much noise neighbors of industrial wind projects should be subject to ended up upsetting both proponents of wind power and those who say the noise poses a health risk to people who live near turbines. Proponents of using industrial wind projects as part of Vermont's long-term goal of getting 90 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2050 say the new wind rules will make achieving that goal more difficult, if not impossible. "These rules will certainly have a chilling effect on wind energy in...

Bernie Sanders’ stepdaughter is considering a run for mayor of Burlington, Vermont, the same office that was the starting point for the independent U.S. senator’s political career. Carina Driscoll, a former city council member and progressive state legislator, said Monday that she would make a decision by the end of the month. She would not say which political party she would run under or if she would run as an independent. Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger is expected to seek re-election in March 2018. “In my mind, it’s time to consider a new direction for Burlington and a new vision, and...
