“How can the government help me?” This seems to be a growing sentiment among the American middle class. “The land of opportunity” is quickly becoming the “nation of the needy.” Here’s a question I received from a reader just last week: “I am not happy with how things are going since the Bush Administration allowed tax cuts for businesses and the wealthy. These cuts were supposed to end for those who just keep earning more off the middle class. My question is: I am told that investors can invest as little as $1000.00 in real estate, and make a living...

DES MOINES - A Cedar Rapids man, apparently at the State Capitol Thursday with a union group, was arrested after a lobbyist caught him trying to steal women's wallets. Marshall Clemons, 38, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested by the Iowa State Patrol and charged with two counts of fifth-degree theft. Lt. Mark Logsdon of the Iowa State Patrol's Post 16 said lobbyist Jim Henter spied Clemons reaching into a woman's bag and retrieving a billfold. Henter followed Clemons and stopped him, Logsdon said. Clemons gave the woman back the money that was in the billfold and then went to a...

Someone please explain to me the intricacies of men’s wallets. The QC needs a new one, and Max wants one of his very own for Christmas (a REAL leather one, please); so off I went in search of the same. Nordstrom’s had some that looked just like wallets for $98, while Kohl’s had some that looked just like wallets for $25 (on sale for $15). Upon close examination, I observed that some are “slim;’ some are tri-fold (others bifold), and some have “extra capacity.” I punted and bought several varieties from which the QC may choose. Max is being given...

Led by the state's twin deacons of demagoguery, U.S. Rep. James Oberstar and state Sen. Steve Murphy, the party of government wasted no time in going public with its shopworn answer to every conceivable catastrophe: more funding and more taxes. Ten years ago, long before Tim Pawlenty or George W. Bush took office, Minnesota's Office of Legislative Auditor made clear in a report to lawmakers that there was a "backlog of bridges that are classified as having structural deficiencies." The 2005 "bridge to nowhere" highway bill (one of the reasons the GOP lost control of Congress in '06) was loaded...

Meanwhile, a giant 700-pound, 12-foot-long alligator was captured and pulled from a South Florida canal after residents called for help. A crane and several men were needed to lift the alligator out of the canal located near Northwest 41st Street in Doral, Fla. Homeowners in the area complained about the alligator, saying it had become a nuisance. A trapper said the alligator was definitely not one residents would want in the area, according to the report. "This is the biggest alligator ever caught in Miami-Dade County," Local 6's Jacquie Sosa said.

This item is based on wire service reports of a bomb, discovered the wrong way,on a recently-landed Turkish airliner. (Istanbul,06/30/04 - via AP,AFP) A booby-trapped item, closely resembling a man's wallet, exploded yesterday aboard a Turkish Airlines jet, that had flown in from Izmir. After the passengers had de-planed, a 3 man cleaning crew boarded, and began cleaning the craft.Inside one of the lavatories, the crew discovered what appeared to be a forgotten or abandoned wallet. When one of the cleaners opened the wallet,it exploded: tearing off his fingers, and slightly injuring the other two workers.Police,as might be expected, are investigating the incident.Turkey is under security alert, because of...
