Warwick’s police chief says a threat to elementary school students in three communities mentioned beheading. Col. Steven McCartney tells WPRO-AM that the threat specified that “beheading is planned.” He called the nature of the threat targeting children in Warwick, Cranston and Johnston chilling. “There was a specific mention of elementary schools in this letter, the other thing which was the specific type of threat, which was beheading, is planned,” McCartney told WPRO. Johnston police received the anonymous threat by mail on Tuesday. Police say officers will be at every school in Johnston, Cranston and Warwick through Friday. Several parents said...

A still-suffering terror victim is hoping to exact some “suite revenge” on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — by taking over his suite at a posh Midtown hotel. Lawyers for ex-New Yorker Stuart Hersh — who was severely injured in a 1997 suicide bombing in Israel — yesterday served The Warwick hotel with legal papers claiming rights to the hate-spewer’s rooms booked for his upcoming visit to the United Nations. Hersh, 64, has a $12 million judgment against Iran for complicity in his wounds, which he claims entitles him to assume Ahmadinejad’s reservation or pocket whatever money the hotel gets paid...

Derderian, 45, is to serve four years in prison followed by three years of probation. He also will have an 11-year suspended sentence, which...

Some may not return home until next week. Paul Tilsley, deputy leader of Birmingham City Council, told BBC News that while some people would be able to return...

Journal State House Bureau Governor Carcieri is seeking a meeting with the Bush administration this week to make his case that The Station nightclub fire is worthy of federal disaster assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency last week denied the governor's request that the Feb. 20 fire -- which killed 98 people and injured about 190 -- be declared a "major disaster" under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief Act. Such a designation would have brought federal aid to help pay for the fire response. The state probably will appeal the decision, Carcieri said yesterday. "I'm trying to see if...

By TOM MOONEY Journal staff writer Updated 1:36 p.m. / The owner of American Foam Corp. in Johnston says The Station nightclub in June 2000 purchased $575 worth of common egg-crate packing foam for soundproofing, but it was not fire retardant. The fire retardant foam would have cost twice as much, according to Aram DerManouelian, who said the club wanted "the lowest grade, the cheapest stuff." "They had a choice, and they bought general purpose egg-crate foam," said DerManouelian. "It kept the noise down, but whoever figured they'd put flame on it? Jesus. For a $575 invoice, here we are."...

Basics of Flashover Essential ConceptsIgnition temperature (also referred to as auto-ignition temperature): All flammable materials have a temperature at which they will ignite, even if they are not in direct contact with flames. It?s the reason an unwatched pan of French fries bursts into flames on a stove. The grease reaches its auto-ignition temperature, and starts burning. Of, course, once it starts burning, the energy release increases geometrically, which speeds the heating of the remaining grease, causing the fire to double in intensity roughly every 30 seconds, until it either runs out of fuel or oxygen.Surface to mass ratio: The...
