Once upon a time, Democrats would sit-in to press for civil rights. Today, they sit-in to take civil rights away. How else to describe the goal of last week's 24-hour sit-in by House Democrats? They took to the floor Wednesday demanding a vote on gun control legislation in the wake of last week's terrorist attack at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Gun ownership is a right. Due process of law is a right. The government needs to meet a very high threshold before denying citizens either one. Rep. John Lewis led the protest, which devolved into screaming matches early Thursday....

Battleground states are called battlegrounds for a reason: They're often close, and 2016 looks like no exception. Hillary Clinton holds narrow leads over Donald Trump across a number of key states of Florida (up three points, 44 to 41 percent); Colorado (Clinton 40 percent, Trump 39 percent); Wisconsin (Clinton up 41 percent to 36 percent) and North Carolina, which has flipped back and forth between the parties in the last two elections, where it's Clinton 44 percent and Trump 42 percent. In the wake of the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom this week, many wondered if the same sentiments...

CBS releases 2016 polls from battleground states like Florida, Colorado, and Wisconsin, showing that a significant number of voters are sympathetic to messages similar to the successful “Brexit” campaign in the UK’s EU Referendum. rom CBS News: Battleground states are called battlegrounds for a reason: They’re often close, and 2016 looks like no exception. • Is Paul Nehlen poised to Knock Off Paul Ryan in Wisconsin

I think it is now safe to say that Paul Ryan is no longer a conservative Republican, nor is he pro-American for that matter. Keep in mind that Paul Ryan’s contributions come largely from outside of his own district. Currently some 80% plus of all of Ryan’s contributions to his re-election campaign come from OUTSIDE of his own 1st District of Wisconsin. Stunningly, around 65% of Ryan’s contributions come from WITHIN the beltway of Washington, D.C. Pondering this statistic, one has to ask themselves, “so who is it that is donating so heavily to Paul Ryan and then why are...

As House Speaker Paul Ryan’s primary race has begun to heat up, Ryan has announced two local media appearances in his home state of Wisconsin over the course of the next two days. Ryan is being challenged by Wisconsin businessman Paul Nehlen, whose campaign centers upon the idea that Ryan “betrayed” Wisconsin voters by pushing open borders immigration policies and the fast tracking of President Obama’s Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. In a Saturday media alert, Ryan’s office announced that “House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) will appear on two Wisconsin radio stations in the coming days—WBEL’s The Daly Show on Sunday,...

It has happened again: another mass shooting. For those of us who have spent a lot of time in places like the Pulse night club, this mass murder is particularly painful. In a culture in which queer people are made to feel grateful for merely being tolerated, gay clubs are spaces where we are celebrated — safe havens that represent the opposite of repression and violence. To have that shattered by someone pledging allegiance to ISIS is an incomprehensible contradiction. It doesn't make any sense.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Tuesday he agrees that delegates to the Republican national convention should be free to vote their conscience, even if that means not supporting presumptive nominee Donald Trump. Walker is a former presidential candidate and a delegate to the convention next month. He told reporters following a groundbreaking at a sausage factory that he will follow Wisconsin Republican Party rules and cast his ballot for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the first round because Cruz won the state primary.

Madison— Faced with delays and inflation over the past five years, four major state highway projects — including a Madison artery — have accumulated overruns in excess of $700 million. While some of these increases come from faulty cost estimates or unavoidable inflation, the new figures underline the obvious: Delays can be costly for Wisconsin taxpayers. When projects are paused because of financial challenges in the state's road fund, the price of materials, labor and real estate can rise. The numbers compiled by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel underline the urgency of a divisive issue for Wisconsin's Republican leaders: finding a...

  • Democrats End Sit-In After 25 Hours, Drawing Attention to Gun Control

House Democrats ended their 25-hour sit-in over gun control legislation on Thursday, a protest Speaker Paul D. Ryan labeled a high-profile stunt that undermined the basic institutions of government. Mr. Ryan said he was “not going to allow stunts like this to stop us from carrying out the people’s business.” He added, “This is about a publicity stunt and now a fund-raising scheme.” But on legislative business, it was Mr. Ryan who prevailed. He personally reclaimed control of the House, pounding his gavel and muscling through a major appropriations bill that included funding for combating the Zika virus, without debate.

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday reacted to the Democratic sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives over gun control by saying: “I don’t think this should be a very proud moment for democracy or the people who staged these stunts.” In his weekly press conference at the Capitol, Ryan said: “This is the people’s house. This is Congress, the House of Representatives, the oldest democracy in the world, and they’re descending it into chaos.”

We've all heard former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's admonition that "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." Yet the public debate about guns in America takes Moynihan's warning to the next level: Each side not only has its own facts, it has its own language. For instance, take the rush after the recent Orlando shootings to ban "assault" or "military-style" weapons like the AR-15 rifle. Gun control advocates immediately jumped to regulate sales of "automatic weapons" and "assault rifles" like the AR-15, which they deem too deadly for one individual to need. Scary stories about...

Sources now indicate Paul Ryan wants Hillary Clinton to be America’s next president, and is doing everything in his power to secure that very outcome. If that allows Hillary to nominate up to three more Supreme Court Justices and thus tilt the balance of power of the Court so it represents far-left, progressive views, so be it. The forty-six-year-old Paul Ryan doesn’t care because he has already been promised, and wishes to make certain, that he is the GOP’s 2020 nominee for president. And it’s not just the 2020 election cycle that is currently on the table. Powerful Republican insiders...

Apple CEO Tim Cook will host a fundraiser with House Speaker Paul Ryan next week as the iPhone maker tries to strengthen its relationships with key Republicans — despite its decision to pull support for the GOP convention because of its distaste for Donald Trump. Cook will help generate cash for Ryan at a private breakfast on June 28 in Menlo Park, Calif., along with Gary Wipfler, the company’s treasurer, according to an invite obtained by POLITICO on Monday. The money benefits not only the speaker but a joint fundraising committee aimed at helping to elect other House Republicans.

In an awkward interview with the Huffington Post, House Speaker Paul Ryan threatened to sue Donald Trump if he were to ban Muslim immigration or build a border wall with Mexico. Considering the current track record of suing Obama over abuses of power, this is little more than a confession of impotence. And yet it’s deeply troubling that a top Republican is willing to go to such lengths to fight for Muslim migration or for that matter illegal immigration in general.
