The rhetorical "water witch" of the Pasadena Star News, staff writer Rebecca Kimitch, has an op-ed disguised as a news story on water rates rising in San Gabriel Valley - read here http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/rds_search/ci_13612524 Since Kimitch likes to cast personal attacks and bad omens on Republicans and conservatives in many of her so-called "news" stories, perhaps the rhetorical term "water witch" is fitting (a "water witch" is a person who claims to be able to find underground water with a divining rod; aka a sorceress). Kimitch's news story merely regurgitates what several local water agency public relations types, or rhetorical "witch...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi considered gaveling Joe Wilson out of order Wednesday night, but decided against calling out the South Carolina Republican in front of a national audience. “The episode was unfortunate. He has apologized. It’s time to talk about health care,” Pelosi told reporters today. But Pelosi, who appeared startled, then angry, after Wilson’s outburst, acknowledged that she was “shocked” at the incident. Pelosi said that she thought about taking formal action against Wilson but quickly decided that was not appropriate. And she said that President Obama “did the right thing” in simply resuming his speech after the heckling....

Villagers, many straight from their farms, and armed with machetes, sticks and axes, are shouting and crowding round in a big group in Kenya's fertile Kisii district. I can't see clearly what is going on, but heavy smoke is rising from the ground and a horrible stench fills the air. More people are streaming up the hill, some of them with firewood and maize stalks. Suddenly an old woman breaks from the crowd, screaming for mercy. Three or four people go after her, beat her and drag her back, pushing her onto - what I can now see - is...

A group of British witches is claiming religious discrimination after a Stockport Catholic church banned them from using its social club for their Crystal Cauldron Witches Ball. Sandra Davis, High Priestess at the Crystal Cauldron, had reserved Our Lady's Social Club in Shaw Heath, Stockport for her Pagan group's Annual Witches' Ball, the UK Telegraph reports. But when she rang to make payment arrangements she was told the event could not be held there and, despite already having printed tickets, another venue must be found. The Diocese of Shrewsbury have since confirmed witches are not "compatible with the Catholic ethos."

AT the Church of God in Gray Court, South Carolina, Nicole Marie-Loretta Leonard has joined the funeral procession. She enacts a funeral danced in front of the service, waves a wand over the coffin, opens it and hits the deceased man on the head with a wand. By way of finale she throws the flowers from the casket at the bereaved family. She drives off in a burgundy Toyota with North Carolina plates. Police respond and pull Nicole Marie-Loretta Leonard over. She admits it all. It, says she, “felt it was the right thing to do at the time.”

Five elderly people suspected of practising witchcraft were burnt to death in western Kenya, police have said. "They include four women and a man in their 80's who were accused of having abducted a child," Kisii deputy police Commander Manasseh Musyoka said yesterday. The killings occurred at Bomatara Village in Mosocho Division. A resident who declined to be named said the abducted child was found dumped on the roadside. "He was unconscious and when he regained it, he was able to tell the names of his abductors. That is when a decision was reached in the village to hunt them...

Are you a conservative? Then you're a d***, and there's something wrong with your brain. At least that's what "24" actress and comedienne Janeane Garofalo believes. According to the former Air America radio host, a conservative starts out an “a**hole,” and the politics come later. She asserted, “The reason a person is a conservative republican (sic) is because something is wrong with them...It really is neuroscience.”

Growing numbers of children in the Democratic Republic of Congo are being labeled as witches, and others face abduction by armed groups for use as soldiers, a United Nations watchdog said Friday. The U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child called on Congolese authorities to better protect young people in their country, including those left orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. "Children, contrary to being treated primarily as victims, have been arrested, detained and tried in military courts for military offences and other crimes allegedly committed while they were in armed forces or groups," it said. Street children in the...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called President Bush "a total failure" on Thursday, among the California Democrat's harshest assessments to date of the president."God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States -- a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject," Pelosi told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in an exclusive interview. The comments came two days after the president sharply criticized Congress over what he described as relative inaction over the course of the legislative term. At the White House on Wednesday, Bush noted that there...

While Sen. While Hillary Clinton aides don't acknowledge it directly, her momentum from a win in Pennsylvania may be blunted on Tuesday by one of the persistent problems of her candidacy: her struggles with black voters. While polls show her effectively tied with Barack Obama in Indiana, she would gain more among both delegates and in the popular vote if she won the other state voting on May 6, North Carolina. But experts expect that more than a third of the voters in the Tar Heel state will be black, and according to National Election Pool exit polling, Obama has won by...

The Democratic contest has been a 50-50 proposition for months now--more precisely, a 51-49 percent endeavor or maybe a 52-48-percent face-off in Barack Obama's favor, according to the pledged delegate count and the popular vote. Hillary Clinton's 10-point win in the Keystone State (which apparently did not net her a significant pickup in pledged delegates) does not change this. In fact, her Pennsylvania triumph does not change the fundamentals of the race. Obama is still on track to end the primaries with a slight edge in pledged delegates. And Clinton is still in the race, clinging tightly to her candidacy...

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama certainly did their homework before the 21st Democratic debate. Hillary Clinton knew what had been printed in the bulletin at Obama's church, and Obama knew the details of Bill Clinton's pardons. As Sen. Obama defended himself against elitism charges, he was clever enough to sneak in a reference to Hillary Clinton's famous 1992 line about how she didn't much bake cookies. This to prove that Yale-educated lawyers have just as much out-of-touch snob baggage as Harvard-educated lawyers do. Neither candidate had read up on the D.C. gun ban before the Supreme Court—because that way, they...

Humor me while we conduct a little thought experiment. Imagine that Barack Obama had lost 10 contests in a row. Imagine that he now trailed Hillary Clinton substantially in the number of Democratic primaries and caucuses won, in total votes cast, in pledged convention delegates, in the overall delegate count, in fundraising and in the ineffable attribute called mojo. Imagine that Obama was struggling, at this late hour, to come up with the right message. What would the conventional wisdom say? That it was over, of course. That Obama was toast. That staking everything on the March 4 primaries in...

Is it over? With Barack Obama reeling off 10 straight victories over Hillary Clinton, including two Tuesday night, experts Wednesday were saying the end may be near in the marathon Democratic presidential contest. “I put Clinton’s chances at reversing the momentum and somehow pulling it out at 20 percent, which obviously means Obama is a very clear favorite now,” said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato. Despite a tight delegate count, many Democrats now say she must sweep March 4 contests in Texas and Ohio or party leaders will begin to declare the race over. “If she loses by...

Human Rights Watch has appealed to Saudi Arabia to halt the execution of a woman convicted of witchcraft. In a letter to King Abdullah, the rights group described the trial and conviction of Fawza Falih as a miscarriage of justice. The illiterate woman was detained by religious police in 2005 and allegedly beaten and forced to fingerprint a confession that she could not read. Among her accusers was a man who alleged she made him impotent. Human Rights Watch said that Ms Falih had exhausted all her chances of appealing against her death sentence and she could only now be...

Hillary Goes Negative on TV February 13, 2008 11:19 AM And so it begins… Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, has launched a negative TV ad against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois. As negative ads go, it's not particularly vicious. (You can watch it HERE.) It slams Obama for not agreeing to a televised debate with Clinton in Wisconsin -- a perfectly factual hit. But then the narrator says, "Maybe he'd prefer to give speeches than have to answer questions. Like why Hillary Clinton has the only health care plan that covers every American, and the only economic plan that freezes foreclosures." What...

Des Moines, IA (AHN) - A new poll of Iowa voters shows Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney each in a tie with their respective presidential rivals. A Brief History of the Salem Witch TrialsOne town's strange journey from paranoia to pardon By Jess Blumberg Smithsonian.com, October 24, 2007 The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft—the Devil's magic—and 20 were executed. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to beguile the popular imagination more than 300 years later. Salem Struggling Several centuries ago, many practicing Christians, and...

What's supposed to be a simple Halloween decoration is now brewing up some controversy in Chicopee. One group is calling the decoration a hate crime. Driving down East Street in Chicopee it's hard not to notice a witch hanging from a noose. To many, it's an innocent Halloween decoration, but for Kelly Lynch it's offensive. "We don't harm anyone, we worship god, we are not evil, and we don't cast spells, " says Lynch. Lynch is a witch. She has been studying witchcraft since she was a child, and says it's her way of life. "We are just like Christians,...

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) last week flew into a sudden burst of media wind shear. After months of mostly rosy portrayals of her campaign’s political skill, discipline and inevitability, the storyline shifted abruptly to evasive answers, shady connections and a laugh that sounded like it was programmed by computer. Clinton’s campaign attributed the change of weather to the vagrant attention span of the national news media, combined with the professional interest of reporters and analysts in ensuring a competitive race for the Democratic nomination. But the intensity and sharp personal edge of much of the commentary was a reminder...

A Spryfield witch says too much toil and trouble is forcing her out of town. For weeks, Shauna Cook, 37, said she's been targeted in her Spryfield home on Lavender Walk because she is a hedge-witch natural healer. Most recently, it was two of her pagan friends being attacked. Shortly after midnight on Friday, an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were leaving Cook's house to catch the bus when four males approached them and asked where they were going. After they told them they were going back home, the boy was attacked. Two more people jumped into the fight,...

Salem, Mass. Graham also was charged with intimidating a witness. They were accused of putting a racoon head and entrails on the doorsteps of Angelica of the Angels and the Goddess' Treasure Chest in May. Obama Ad on Hillary-Hater Site by Jason Horowitz Published: August 15, 2007 Obama Ad on Hillary-Hater Site Here's something that's probably not in the script for the Obama campaign: I noticed yesterday on this conservative anti-Hillary web site an ad for Barack Obama's campaign site, prominently displayed among titles like "Truth Boating Hillary" and appeals to "Derail Hillary." The bottom of the ad clearly stated that the "Meet Barack Obama" ad was paid for by Obama for America. The ad's presence on a site accusing Clinton of breaking federal election laws isn't necessarily the result of a direct decision...
