Republican overcomes underdog status Seizing momentum as the campaign wore on, Republican Danny Jones romped to victory as Charleston’s next mayor Tuesday night, capturing more than 57 percent of the vote over Democrat Chris Smith. Jones, energized by $75,000 worth of television ads and $17,000 in mass mailings in the last few weeks of the campaign, overcame Smith’s substantial primary campaign momentum to win. Jones said he knew he would be victorious on election night after seeing the first precincts tabulated from the West Side, where he won handily. He promised to stick with the job, in response to...

Charleston’s mayoral race is a dead heat, according to a survey done by a well-known local pollster who has contributed to Democrat Chris Smith’s campaign. According to the poll, Republican Danny Jones holds a 38 percent to 37 percent lead over Smith, with 25 percent undecided. It has a margin of error of 8 percent. Don Richardson, a consultant, researcher and pollster since his work for Democratic Gov. Jay Rockefeller, conducted a random sampling for Smith of those who had voted at least twice in the past six city elections. That poll included 149 people, contacted between Thursday and Sunday...

CHARLESTON - After tasting blood only months ago, like a roaring lion, the Republican Party wants to feast on the Legislature again - specifically, the Senate. Which is why, although no names have been tossed out, the party is aiming its gunsights on all available Senate seats - including two in southern Wet Virginia. That means the party is shopping around for someone to take on Sens. Shirley Love, D-Fayette, and Billy Wayne Bailey, D-Wyoming, assuming each runs again and survives the primary. Last November, the Republicans grabbed four of the 34 seats in the Senate, and the party hungers...

CLARKSBURG -- About 200 Republican Party supporters attended the annual Lincoln Day fund-raising dinner Saturday night in Clarksburg. It was the first time in several years the fund-raiser had been in Clarksburg, said Dick Laughlin, chair of the Harrison County Republican Executive Committee. Laughlin and other GOP officials were encouraged by the heavy attendance Saturday. The event sold out. "The Republican Party is back and kicking again in Harrison County," Laughlin said. The dinner's guest speaker, former Gov. Arch Moore, agreed. Moore noted the GOP has made several advances in the last few elections, both statewide and nationally. The party...

The ENEMY forged the stolen steel Delighted at the pain we would soon feel A hot branding iron to burn a 9 and 11 In the hearts of all righteous under Heaven The demons smiled and admired their work Then dedicated it with an unholy curse The plans were laid well, the deceptions intact With stooges called "martyrs" they began the attack They boarded the planes with thin, tight-lipped smiles Politely nodding to each small child - In a short time they’d know TERROR too real When their KILLERS captured the pilot’s wheel May the TWIN TOWERS of bright beacon...

The President has just landed at Yeager Airport and left for the Charleston Civic Center. Continuous coverage on the WVMH statewide network (WOWK and whatever those stations are in Wheeling and Clarksburg) and WCHS Channel 8. WSAZ is only going to offer "updates." My question: What kind of plane is that serving as "Air Force One"? I know 747s are too big for Charleston....

In the Eyewitness News-Gazette Poll, Capito recieved 50% of the vote, Humphreys recieved 32%. However, 18% of the voters remain undecided. The question is, will this week's political visits impact those numbers? Congressional candidate Jim Humphreys' will be campaining with House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt on Tuesday. On Thursday, Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito will have President Bush stomping for her. Political Analyst Danny Jones says the Presidenital visit will have more of an impact on the Second District congressional race. "Minority leader Gephardt, that's also significant, but not as significant because he won't draw that kind of crowd," said Jones.

Mike Connolly Daily Mail Staff Tuesday October 15, 2002; 11:00 AM Not even the Republican Senatorial Committee thinks Jay Wolfe can unseat incumbent Democrat Jay Rockefeller in the West Virginia Senate race. The committee can give Wolfe, 47, up to $202,000 to help his campaign. So far, they haven't given him a dime and the election is only three weeks away. But Wolfe isn't complaining too much. He knows he is a long shot to beat Rockefeller. "I guess I understand it," Wolfe said about the committee. "When I got into it, I didn't ask them if I should. I...

Editorials: Congress Wednesday October 02, 2002; 09:20 AM W.Va. needs Shelley Moore Capito, not a big-spending millionaire liberal THE Democratic Party desperately wants to regain control of the House of Representatives, where Republicans now outnumber Democrats 222 to 211, with two Independents hanging around. If the House stays Republican, the nation goes one way. If the House goes Democratic, national policies would take on a different character entirely. The divide is reflected in one of the critical races for control of the House -- the 2nd District race between Republican Shelley Moore Capito and second-time Democratic challenger Jim Humphreys. Capito...
