Greek police have sealed off Zoniana, a lawless mountain village in Crete that appears to be home to a large marijuana-growing operation. Officers in a raid on the area reported coming under about 1,000 rounds of gunshot. They returned to the village on Tuesday and masked officers were still blocking roads yesterday while more than 200 armed colleagues searched houses. The operation has highlighted how some parts of Crete – which has a tradition since the Ottoman rule of holding weapons – remain outside government control.
