On a recent flight, I found myself seated next to a man I’ll call Rick, who was keen for conversation.

We established that we are both lawyers. Rick works for the government, and I explained that I lead a gun violence prevention organization. Rick took that as an invitation to talk about guns.

A self-described “2A fanatic” from Texas, Rick grew up with guns and today owns more than 40 firearms. He considers himself a collector, and many of his guns are antiques — he’s not interested in assault-style firearms — and he makes his own ammunition from recycled casings. In short, Rick is a gun guy, and I was interested in his views on gun violence.

Rick offered that he has family in Uvalde, where 19 elementary school students and two educators were murdered in a mass shooting last year. He declared that... he felt that “something needs to be done.”

I asked Rick what he believed should be done. He wondered aloud about psychological testing for gun buyers but concluded that that would be too challenging to administer.

I asked what he thought about “red flag” laws that allow for temporary removal of firearms when a gun owner is determined to pose a risk for harming themself or others. Rick didn’t support these types of laws because he doesn’t trust the process.

Efforts to tackle military and veteran suicide by addressing access to firearms? No, he sees suicide as an individual decision.

What about limits on gun ownership for those with a history of domestic violence? Rick had mentioned that his legal work included handling sexual assault cases, so this seemed like low-hanging fruit. But again, Rick was not on board. He felt there were too many cases in which women falsely accused their partners of domestic abuse.

It’s a good thing the civilians in Israel didn’t have guns last week. Some of the Palestinians could have been hurt.

Phony “conversations” like this are stock-in-trade fantasies for activist hoplophobes. Seems a new version crops up every year or so, gets passed around to the usual presstitutes, and then sinks out of sight.

Well, of course increased access to guns means increased suicides by gun.

Duh. It’s likely to be quicker and easier than beating yourself to death with a stick.

That does not imply an increase in suicides, which I would suspect is driven by a complex group of other factors, not the least of which is that children are just not taught coping skills.

They use suicide by gun in gun violence statistics. Not really fair. Given a choice in a suicidal person, a gun is likely an easy and effective option. If no gun....seems like there are plenty of other options.

They are free to use "suicide by gun" in the statistics they employ in calling for more gun control - but then they should also be forced to accept "suicide by jumping out of windows" as a meaningful, legitimate reason to implement more window control.

Regards,

Huffington Post is the perfect “liberals are mentally superior and their political solutions are just better” source of information.

I remember my youth. Boy Scouts, learning firearm safety from a WW2 combat veteran who landed in an amphibious assault of Pacific enemy held islands. Yes, I remember reading Boy's Life magazine and my dad and I going into the basement and building a 22 rifle bullet trap and target for an indoor shooting range that was outlined in that Scouting magazine article. Not only was I allowed and encouraged to go down to the basement to target shoot after I finished my school homework. I also kept a 22 rifle and ammo in my bedroom growing up. There were no trigger locks, no gun safes, etc. Oh course I had been taught firearm safety by someone who knew first hand that firearms can kill.

So the liberal pointed out to Rick that in most homes with firearms, not all of the firearms are locked up. When I grew up there were no trigger locks or gun safes, there was personal responsibility, a sense of right and wrong along with a value of human life.

The do use suicide to pad their gun violence stats but rarely tell you or actually dont know its included in whatever propaganda theyre spewing…. Which is quite disingenuous…. Seeing as more than half of “gun deaths” come from suicide.
