Some of us would meet for coffee every day before work. A local place, not busy like Starbucks. Sometimes there would be someone sitting alone nearby and I’d strike up a conversation.
One time it was a 20-something young woman. She said she had just moved to Orange County from the San Fernando Valley. Over the next few days she said she had come to OC after quitting a job as receptionist for an adult film outfit. (SFV, there’s a shocker) They had kept asking her to be an extra and she said no, until finally one time she gave in. She didn’t elaborate on that but I think going along with it bothered her a lot.
I got the impression that she was desperate to return to ‘the normal world’ and hanging around our little coffee group was her trying to reconnect with normal. She reminded me of someone trying to get their bearings after leaving the drug world or a cult.
