Never mind the fact that they earn high incomes from these corporations and own stock in these corporations. Never mind the fact that corporations provide large numbers of jobs, and that we cannot rely on mom and pop family businesses to feed America and produce much of what we need, The environmentalists have theirs' so screw everyone else.

By all means, lets fund more studies, but heaven forbid that we actually DO anthing!!
Look, this nation has vast reserves of potential energy, but we are allowed to exploit virtually nothing of it.
Coal, oil, oil shales, oil sands, natural gas, hydro potential, geothermal........the stuff is everywhere, and I do mean in every state and in most counties. There is a huge known oil/gas region under where I sit typing this, here in Maryland. Federal law prohibits even exploration.
Most alternative energy sources are nothing but pipe dream. They are fine for local, even residential use, but inadequate for large scale generation.
Wind power suffers from Nimbyism and is attacked by bird protectionists. Wave and tidal power schemes have similar issues. Geothermal outside of Iceland has to fight envirofreaks to even get access to most potential areas, much less get permits to build plants. Large scale solar generation has been proven a failure in California, and is not practical anywhere it rains.
We need to go with what we know works, while safer, cleaner sources are developed. Let's drill off the California coast, let's drill off the Virginia coast, and while we're at it lets drill in my back yard.

Most of what I see here is a hoax. We don't need more research, what we need is to realize that new technologies are blocked by politics. The rest is BS. We have done the research over 30 years but implementing wind and bio fuels means transferring much economic power from places like New Jersey and California to Montana and Iowa. The old guard will not let that happen and block implementation of needed distribution capabilities. If you want to see energy self-sufficiency, support getting the government out of the business they hamstring by all of their meddling.

May I be at least one of the first to welcome you to the Free Republic.
I will also recommend you purchase your hybrid in Europe and have it shipped. Otherwise you will have a long wait to get one once back in the US.

There's no reason why California shouldn't reject all forms of energy production that aren't "natural". What could be more natural than pumping pockets of dinosaur farts out of the ground. These peepel need edukating.

<<>> This is an interesting thought. The economics don't work as well as they do with oil, because food is a renewable resource. In theory there is a limit to the amount of food available based on the amount of total nutrients, water and energy available, but technology would allow any nation with limited supplies of one to either employ technology or purchase the necessary materials on their own. The cartel would have to be extremely effective, otherwise, the US would just lose market share. Essentially the inability to import food would be solved through a combination of cheating and innovative technology. It has a lot more parallels with oil than perhaps you may have originally intended.

As Mr. Watson looked on, Chief Happynook, addressing the Conference on Environmental Law and Canada's First Nations, November 1999, conveyed his disappointment with the environmental movement.
"Over the past 30 years, I have witnessed the environmental movement evolve from individuals who were truly concerned about the environment to a protest industry which is now a multitude of multi-million dollar corporations". The protest industry has abandoned fact, and has instead, through "media manipulation ... lobbying initiatives, and misinformation dissemination" used the media to portray sea-mammal hunters as "unethical barbarians without conscience".
Accusing Mr. Watson and the protest industry he represents of "collecting millions of dollars by preying on people who are unaware of the dynamics of indigenous cultures and coastal communities, and our relationship to our environment and ecosystems".
Chief Happynook posed a pointed question to them: "what puzzles me is, if they are truly environmentalists, conservationists, then why are they not spending the millions of dollars they raise on stopping the pollution that is negatively affecting the oceans (and) our traditional food sources?". Mr. Watson, apparently prepared only to discuss whaling, made no reply.

The political left, including many socialist and Marxist Democrats, engage in blatant hypocrisy as they attempt to dictate that others live a reduced lifestyle and level of comfort and safety while they continue to live their lavish lifestyles.
The highly offensive Arianna Huffington was jetting around in private jets while placing advertisements claiming that if you drive a Sport Utility Vehicle (the demonized "SUV") you are guilty of supporting terrorism. Needless to say, private jets are less efficient than larger passenger jets just as limousines are less efficient that public buses.
Many of the wealthy elitist socialist and communist Democrats are hypocrites on an even more important issue - the natural right of ordinary nonviolent adults to self-defense and to own firearms, the safest and most effective means of self-defense.
These gun using "anti-gun" elitist hypocrite liberals include the following, and many more:
- Former President Bill Clinton abused his position to enact dangerous gun control laws while he and his family enjoyed the best and probably the most expensive personal security service in the world - the U.S. Secret Service - at taxpayer expense.
- Democrat U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein from California. She pushed legislation to ban handguns while she reportedly had at least two handguns and a self-defense permit, also known as a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit. She also authored and pushed Democrat legislation to ban traditional semiauto firearms mislabeled and demonized as "assault weapons".
- California State Senator Alan S. Lowenthal from Long Beach (http://democrats.sen.ca.gov/templates/SDCTemplate.asp?cp=MemberPage&pg=senhome&sln=Lowenthal&sdn=27&zrn=Zone/. Lowenthal is another ultra-liberal Democrat who actively promoted restrictive anti-self-defense firearm prohibition laws. Yet he showed up at one of his anti-gun publicity events escorted by taxpayer subsidized armed body guards - two armed and uniformed California Highway Patrol Officers with two CHP patrol cars. These armed body guards remained with Lowenthal for many hours until the end of the event, rather than patrolling the freeways and highways to protect those who pay their salary and other overhead costs.
As usual, those of us who were present to provide facts and information in support of self-defense, private firearms ownership, and public safety, were calm, civil, and polite. Lowenthal's blatant extravagance and disregard for real public safety squandered the crime control value of these two CHP officers had they been doing their real job rather than pacifying Lowenthal. Of course, Lowenthal may have been using them as taxpayer subsidized props in a feeble attempt to lend legitimacy and to his campaign and create the false impression he is on the side of public safety.
- Former San Jose Police Chief and Handgun Control, Inc. poster boy, Joseph McNamara. He forbid officer Leroy Pyle from speaking as a private citizen against gun ban legislation (1989 Mike Roos-David Roberti legislation, AB 356/SB 292) during public hearings before the California State Legislature, while he posed in uniform for HCI propaganda brochures.
As police chief, he had the right to carry a loaded concealed handgun for self-defense while he worked to deny the law abiding public their natural right as recognized by the Constitution to that same right.
McNamara wrote in his book titled "Safe and Sane", which should have been titled "Unsafe and Insane", "As much as I am opposed to the average person owning a handgun, some people have a legitimate need to own one, such as wealthy corporate executives and Hollywood celebrities. If Sharon Tate had access to a handgun during the Manson murders, innocent lives might have been saved." In other words, according to this liberal elitist, only the lives of the rich and famous are worth protecting or saving.
- Carl Rowan, a Chicago based syndicated columnist, often wrote newspaper columns calling for banning firearms. He shot two boys who were swimming in his pool. He was in violation of Chicago's extreme gun control law.
- The wealthy liberal lesbian television talk show host Rosie O'Donnell abused her position and show to lobby for firearm prohibition, stating that if you own a gun you should go to jail, while her armed bodyguard protected her and her adopted children.
- Wealthy Hollywood celebrity Sharon Stone, who lived in an exclusive estate with high walls and expensive security systems, owned multiple firearms for self-defense while abusing her celebrity status to lobby for firearm prohibition.
- The former long time KABC AM 790 (Los Angeles, CA) talk show host and socialist Michael Jackson constantly abused his position and talk show to lobby for banning and confiscating firearms from the law abiding public, while rudely censoring political opposition, and while he owned at least one handgun for self-defense.

I lived in Alaska from 1974 till 2003. The Alaska oil from the wildlife refuge area is NOT a short term solution to oil woes, anyone who thinks it is is IMO delusional It is a long term one when you consider the mechanics of getting it and transporting it. That being said, we still need to get it and as soon as possible. And you would have to really look to find an Alaskan who disagrees on the subject
