Hyundai and ABC Sports mock Catholics during the World Cup
ABC and ESPN via WyBlog ^ | 6/13/2010 | Chris Wysocki

At mass this morning Monsignor Desmond called our attention to an appalling ad he saw while watching the World Cup yesterday. Hyundai chose to mock the Blessed Sacrament in a misguided attempt to sell a few more of their crappy cars. And nobody at ABC Sports thought it was in poor taste for them to do so.

The imagery is blasphemous and patently insulting to any devout Catholic. Hyundai's sacrilege has to be intentional. There is too much Catholic ritual incorporated, and mocked, for this to be happenstance.

You can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't pull a stunt like this with Islam!

They will never see this ad.

Geared for post modern Western folk who aren’t faithful.

The Blessed Sacrament is much bigger than this. And by extension so is the Roman Catholic Church. Don’t take the bait.

I’m a go-to-mass-weekly, teach 5th grade Cathecism Catholic, and I didn’t find that insulting.

Singing in latin

“Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world” (John 1:29)

to a soccer ball is mockery and blasphemy.

As a Catholic you weren’t offended by the Agnus Dei being chanted as they carried a soccer ball?

I found that enormously offensive beside being the form in the Eucharistic sacrifice:

“Agnus dei Qui tollis peccata mundi Miserere nobis”

Lamb of God, is Christ, Jesus.

Maybe I am desensitized, from being inured to it - it seems everybody in the media, academia, and the national and world “government” hates Catholics.

I’d blame part of this on the US not being a “Catholic country.” I live in Ohio and knew people who’d never even heard of the Pope until John Paul II died.

....Shows the nuts these guys have, plus, given that they are in Africa, they would be insulting some 83 UN members following Moamarr Ghadaffi.

So, in their opinion, they are supporting the majority of Africa and a large segment of the UN. Congratulations!

The commercial mocks the Mass and mocks the Blessed Sacrament.

What would you actually find insulting?

“Maybe I am desensitized, from being inured to it -”

So were the Jews. Each time a new insult, slight or law went into effect, “That’s not so bad.”

Everything is incremental. In my long life, no one has ever dared to openly mock the Eucharist until now. You don’t think the Evil One is behind this do you?

Only people that are blind and ignorant could not see the reason for this outrage.

Completely harmless. Any Catholics making a stink over this are making fools of themselves, like Muslims do over images of Mohammed.

As a Catholic that ad certainly offends me.

As a lover of nice automobiles, Hyundai and their POS cars they offend me.

I'd like to be able to boycott them, but I wouldn't have been caught dead in a Hyundai, even before this display of abject stupidity.
