The school quit using it after about two-three years because the 7-8th grade teachers began complaining that the kids were unprepared for the math that was being taught in those grades. Prior to Everyday Math, these kids were prepared.
That’s crazy. They will send Everyday Math homework home sometimes, and I can’t even figure out what they’re asking!
(My husband started giving her math lessons at home.)
Seattle suburb here. The teacher’s were not allowed to teach the kids their basic math facts. All through grade school my wife would go down twice a week to “math assist”. Well, really - she was going over the math memorization facts with two classes. The kids would get to leave class for a bit to work with her and they would get fact sheets from her to memorize.
The teachers and the principal were all for it. The school district didn’t know.
I’ve found that in spite of the public schooling with it’s problems, if you stay involved and pick up the slack once in awhile (like the math facts), and give the conservative viewpoints it is okay. My one daughter has to do a presentation on “Earth Day”. Part of it will be on how hunting helps conservation and the animals. (Pretty sure her teacher isn’t expecting that!)
