The reason communism gets a pass is because it represents a set of ideals that most people basically agree with. No class distinctions, no race distinctions, perfect equality, perfect peace, everyone their brothers keeper, all mankind as a great big happy family. It’s really very Christian in a way. The problem of course is that it causes death and misery on an epic scale when put into actual practice. But when it’s just kind of out there floating around as a moral abstraction, when it’s just carrying signs around but not having a real impact, then it basically gets the collective yawn from everybody.
Yes, the perfect equality of chronic shortages, the perfect peace of the grave, everyone their brothers keeper in informing to the secret police.
Yes communism is an almost religious experience, if your religion includes class warfare, intentionally starving millions to death, expropriation of private property, total lack of civil rights, and no mention of a supreme being other then the state. Yeah, that some religion all right. It has failed everywhere it has been tried (even Cuba is looking to expand its private economy!)
It reminds of that old wheeze:
Q-What is the difference between the USA and Russia?
A-The communist party is illegal in Russia.
