Food fest called off due to Occupy Boston tent city ($2M police overtime tab?)

The sprawling Occupy Boston encampment in downtown has forced the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy to call off a food fest long planned for this weekend.

The “Greenway Mobile Food Fest” set for Saturday has been canceled and won’t be held until the spring, the conservancy announced today.

“Saturday’s event was to include 12 mobile food vendors, many of them in large trucks. It was to take place on Dewey Square, the only parcel large enough to accommodate this type of gathering,” the conservancy said today in a release.

The Occupy Boston tent city has taken over Dewey Square, with no end in sight of their protest encampment. An attempt annex another Conservancy plot of grass early Monday — over Boston police objections — resulted in the arrest of 142 protesters.

Tomorrow’s cookbook signing and next Tuesday’s Pumpkin Festival — both slated for Dewey Square — are also called off, according to the Boston Public Market Association.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino said yesterday a few dozen agitators “from another country, another city” hijacked the protest resulting in the arrests.

“My message to them is, let’s continue to work together,” Menino said. “I’m not going to go out there and break heads. That’s not my style.”

The protests could prove to be a costly budget-buster as the belt-tightening Hub is staring down a potential $2 million police overtime tab if the ever-expanding shanty town remains through the end of the month, a top city official told the Herald today.

Boston Municipal Research Bureau president Sam Tyler fears the city could dig itself a massive financial hole should the protests linger for months.

“In terms of cost in a very tight budget ... you can’t just keep doing this forever,” Tyler said.

The Greenway Conservancy urged visitors to the Hub to not be turned away by the Occupy tents, adding: “While this half acre of the Greenway is in full-time use by Occupy Boston, the remaining 15.5 acres of the Greenway remain open, beautiful and welcoming to all.”

The Greenway Conservancy, which maintains Dewey Square, could be looking at its own staggering tab once the tent city is gone. It could cost as much as $125,000 to re-seed grass on the 25,000-square-foot plot of land, experts say.

One more nail in the local economy's coffin. Good work, hippies! You could've been making money by working that event!

($2M police overtime tab?)

No wonder the unions support it.

these thieves have found a way to milk the system in broad daylight.

The mayor needs to knock some heads together. It would cut down on the PD’s overtime and allow responsible business owners to come in and try to earn some money. It’s time to take out the trash mayor.

Some hippie Occupier on the Food Festivals Facebook page was being a smart @$$ about the event. She isn’t receiving much love from the locals who like the event and the park. See here.

If I were mayor I’d be tempted to pull out the cops. And the sanitation workers. And I’d relax what I imagine are fairly strict gun laws just for the local shop owners so they can provide their own security.

'Free' speech. . .made possible by the monies of 'rich capitalists' paying taxes that protect their sorry butts out there. (Did I hear that 'medical' etc. made available to them? (Maybe I was dreaming?)

Am thinking 'Election 2012'. . .where will they be? Blocking the streets? Or worse?

As 'Freedom of Speech' can extend from 'my hand' but not connecting with someone's nose; at 'what point', does this move from 'free' to being a public threat to the life - and liberty of other 'equal' citizens protected by our Constitution?

(And when their costs are bankrupting a city's/and it's taxpayers treasury?)

Menino is a fool. A net addition of tax revenue has been traded for a net loss of tax funds.

The Greenway Conservancy, which maintains Dewey Square, could be looking at its own staggering tab once the tent city is gone. It could cost as much as $125,000 to re-seed grass on the 25,000-square-foot plot of land, experts say.

The society should have demanded the squatters be forcefully removed from the property they are responsible for maintaining and, if I'm not mistaken, actually funded the construction of.

I have to say, this is the type of thing people don’t like.

Leftists tend to enjoy food festivals that support Kennedyesque charities in MA. It’s like closing the Brooklyn Bridge. Even with the support of the MSM, it’s hard to shove it down people’s throats and get them to say they like it.

I can tell you my lib family gets miffed when they lose out on their fancy city festivals. That’s what they pay taxes for, you know. The good life.

The Dem party is supporting this. You do remember Obama with his arm around the NY governor the year before last, the kiss of death?

The Dem governor knew he had to make some hard choices and bucked the party. They fried him. Remember where dem loyalties lie. The machine. This guy is hand in hand with Deval Patrick, one of the most inept governors in the country.

I know there are good freeper exceptions, but in Boston, the voters are truly getting the government they deserve.

Interesting. That is .57 acres. Just how many of the "99%" are there? A tent city? Please. Assume a 10 foot by 10 foot area for a tent average (including access). Not really that generous. You have 250 tents. Two per tent? Ok. Flea baggers. Two per tent and a it makes it three per tent. At the most maybe 750 flea breeders. We have more people camping out for Penguins tickets. Give me a break.

Tell the conservancy to recycle some old stadium astroturf to match this "populist media movement". It is green and a proper use of recycling. The new grass will be as authentic and new like the protesting squatters!

Thanks for 'details' per 'Free' speech/assembly. . .

Altogether sickening. ( 'YES' MSM; for sure, these 'occupiers'; just like the 'Tea Party' folks./sarc off).

We need to hear daily, from now till Election; our Repub Candidates and Leadership speaking the truth per the origins; the motivations, power, et al; that so drive this insanity and all else that animates the Marxist/Alynsky revolutionaries in our White House.

(Cain will; Newt will.)

Almmost choked, again, tonight; listening to Boehner discussing his desire to work with these people so as to get something positive accomplished. Could he not say the same thing; somehow, without saying it? Is he at least prepared; to take 'credit' where credit due, when votes are cast; when befefits accrue - while at same time, pound home, the ugly truth of Dem Agenda? Surely by now; Boehner can recognize an enemy, when he sees one, no? If not now; then 'too late smart', for us!/

Seems this 'free (not) speech'is morphing into what could be ID as an 'Economic Terrorism' and it would also seem; that no city; should have to put up with a terrorism, irrespective of whatEVER banner, the 'protestors' claim to act under.

Clearly; given our heightened 'security' MO's; public safetty is endangered as well. No?

Do not think these people have a right to extend their 'speech 'time per location; when their 'freedom'; becomes, something else entirely; not just a public nuisance; but a public threat.

One of the problems with big cities and this “Occupy XXX” “movement” is that most have Democratic mayors, city councils, police unions and etc...
