Paul J. Weber of the Associated Press writes an article posted at ReporterNews about the Cancer and Prevention Research Institute of Texas, which was created by the state in 2007:
A Nobel laureate resigning in protest from a $3 billion cancer research initiative in Texas told colleagues in heated emails that he was trying to prevent misuse of taxpayer dollars and funding decisions based on political considerations, according to state records released Thursday... Allegations of undeserving awards and political influence sullying the funding process were levied by Dr. Alfred Gilman, the agency's chief scientific officer and a Nobel Prize winner in medicine.

That’s the trouble with science and medicine.....they’re run by people and people are bags of emotions walking around.
I did not read the article, but for a long time I have been touting that the medical research industry has fallen into the same trap as publicly funded unions. Billions upon billions of dollars have been funneled to the cancer industry. Where is the measure of return? With such monies, the bureaucracy grows like “cancer” itself!
We have a huge problem with cronyism in Texas. The Federal goverment sets the stage as most money comes from the Feds. It is a process of building kingdoms - not evaluating real science in Texas. With socialized medicine, it will only get worse...if there is any money left over for medical research. There will not be.
