Fellow Freepers I am in need of assistance from your personal experiences. I'm looking for a place to spend a week relaxing/reading books on a balcony in September. What I'm trying to find is a nice hotel with great mountain or coastal views in the US. Would prefer something that's not at the base of a mtn but up the hill so to speak or on a rocky coastline. Want to park my butt for a week, drink wine, read books, eat, relax. Don't seem to be finding answers on travel sites. Any and all recommendations appreciated!
Colorado mountains in mid-September are crisp, leaves are changing. We head to Breckenridge/Aspen/Steamboat Springs the middle weekend (lots of Oktoberfest activities). Cheap condo rentals, motel rentals. We usually hit a condo up there.
Colorado ?
Rent a cabin in the Smokies. Perfect time of year for it.
Timberline Lodge
I traveled around the country for seven weeks last summer and saw many beautiful places. But, you’re looking for a coastline place and I have to recommend Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor, ME). My family has vacationed there for years and I’ve always wanted to go in the fall. If you go, I’ll be jealous. :-)
Oh! And Acadia National Park has mountains *and* coast! Although, the mountains aren’t anywhere near as big as the ones in the west. :-)
My backyard...
Yup - great place to stay.
If you want closer to “home” can you ask a travel agent about the Pocanos or Catskills?
I haven’t been to either place since I was a little girl.
I hope you find something, a mountain vacation with lots of books sounds like heaven.
One of our favorite places —
Marriott’s Surf Watch resort on Hilton HEad Island, SC.
It’s a ‘time share’ place, but you can stay/ rent there like a hotel if you plan ahead.
In Septemebr the kids are back in school, the beaches are quiet. the beaches are gently slope sand, no rocks. You can walk for miles. No problems with the ‘locals’ or townies to worry about.
BE CERTAIN you reserve a room with a view of the water from your balcony. One of the buildings is just behind the breakwater/sand berm with a great view (and audio of the surf), and TWO of the buildings also have a nice but farther back surf view *IF* you are on the fifth floor.
Your balconies are big, the place is spotless, SurfWatch is Marriott’s domestic resort of the year. Ya can’t go wrong there.
Now, since we OWN there, I have no idea what it costs to stay there, so the price may or may not be good in September.
BEst vacation weeks my wife and I have EVER had — when we wanted to just ‘vege’ and enjoy the beach/water— were at SurfWatch.

Park City, UT. Depending on how much you want to spend, there are several ski resorts that have excellent hotels (at differing price points) and they offer special rates for summer, because it’s off-season for them.
Plan on either bringing your own wine or patronizing the state-owned liquor stores. That’s the only place to get wine in Utah, unless you’re willing to pay your hotel’s mark-up.
Methinks you might enjoy that.
Hidden Valley Bed and Breakfast, formerly Warickton Plantation at the George Washington National Forest in Virginia.
It's miles away from anywhere, and has the clean and beautiful Jackson River flowing by it. The 1993 Civil War movie "Sommersby" was filmed there.
St. Johns, USVI. You’ll have to fly into St. Thomas :( then take a ferry to St. Johns but you won’t regret it.
Sun Valley, ID is nice.
I just got back from Lake Tahoe and it was quite scenic.
White mountains in NH.
Ventana Inn and Spa, Big Sur, CA. Also has Ventana campground in the redwoods with cabins. Big Sur = heaven on earth.
