“Context, man, context.”
I watched the video.
My impression was of parents who seem to think they are dealing with a very fragile person.
Why is he fragile?
Because he lost his mind? I have no reason to believe that, or not, but that’s how they’re talking. Or because he has suffered torture/brain washing/trauma during the last five years and they’ve been coached on how best to approach him? I find that the most plausible reason.
They are obviously very emotional and love their son very much. I did not pick up on any “American Taliban” vibe, but more like some very traumatized and loving parents were trying hard to communicate in a very specific way to their probably messed up son.
So that explains why the father learned to speak Pashtu?
>>>"I did not pick up on any American Taliban vibe..."<<<
Seriously?
It seems that you and about everyone else have a different take on this. I got the impression from listening to the father that he was being extremely careful as to what he was saying so as not to appear traitorous to the nation at large and yet relay some sort of message to his son and possibly others.
