When I was growing up, it was “Suomi”; now, it’s “Saami” or “Sami”. What gives?

When speaking on this subject, If I don't say 'Laplanders' (or reindeer herders) people have no idea who I'm talking about.

Now, I understand that the Saami view the term 'Laplanders' like some do the 'N'-word.

So....suit yourself.
