IIRC the last really big flare was back in the 1859. There was a CME in 2012 that missed Earth. The sun has be getting quieter lately.

How is/was sun activity measured for times before the technological era? ie. 1859

The sun has be getting quieter lately.

That's because its building up for the big one...BOOM.

I have no interest in living in this world if FreeRepublic goes off line.

I know of some old timer amateur radio operators who still revel about the DX days of Cycle 19 in the late 1950’s. IIRC, that was well studied for the, then, International Geophysical Year (IGY).
