As a schoolboy years ago I read a lot of civil war history. The part I could never get my young head around was the way families were divided against one another - brother against brother, as the cliche went. I could never understand how things could get so bad that even people in the same family would take opposite sides in a war of Americans against Americans.
I understand now.
