Re "Odd Thomas" - I looked it up on Amazon prime. It shows 8 books in a series. Hmmm.... a significant time investment. Any particular one stand out more than the others?

But there's also a free streaming movie of the same name. Guess I'll try that.

I’ve always thought his writing deteriorated when he began to use a word processor. That would probably have been around the early to mid 1980s, so it’s pretty much as you stated. Have you ever considered this?

I asked you to cite the particulars because I imagine the legitimacy of grammatical rule breaking would depend on the details.

Elmore Leonard sometimes took liberties with grammar in the interest of speeding the story along, and I never heard any complaints about him.

The very first one is called just "Odd Thomas"

Some of the later ones don't hold up as well, but the first book stands well on its own.

Elmore’s exceptions to the rules were of a completely different nature. He was a master of the English language, both written and—more important—as spoken. He was the most literary of all the crime/thriller writers.

I can’t bear to give his books away. They are all lined up on a convenient shelf and I read them when I want to be amused and amazed all over again and am never disappointed.

I continue to read Leonard’s works over and over in the hopes of learning though osmosis.

There’s one about a marine. Can’t remember the title now. It is a brilliant portrait of the nature of a marine.

Sent it to a marine freeper one time but he never even acknowledged that he received it. He had warned me he doesn’t like fiction, but he may have hated it for other reasons. I never found out.

If you’re an Elmore Leonard fan, you’ll love the FX series, Justified. It’s the most “Leonard” production ever. Outside, perhaps, of Get Shorty. Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins are magnificent.

We’re heading out to do some shooting this morning. The “range” is noted in the book, Collateral Crimes:

****************************************************************************************************

Around midnight, the sky to the east became a little brighter as they approached Phoenix. Jonathan said, “So where’s the shipment going to?”

“Maricopa, a couple hours from here. Google maps shows it out in the desert west of the Ak Chin Reservation.”

“In the desert?”

“Yeah. I know the area. We go target shooting out there.

[snip]

They exited the interstate at Queen Creek Road and turned right. There was a sign telling them they were entering the Gila River Indian Community, and the landscape changed from suburbs to desert. Mark said they were on the John Wayne Parkway, which made Jonathan smile. The reason he was there was to avoid the John Wayne Airport. When they got to Maricopa, Mark made a right, then a few miles down made a left and drove across some railroad tracks onto a narrow two-lane.

“Almost there,” he said.

It seemed to Jonathan they were going deep into the desert. They had only seen a few cars since leaving the interstate, and every road they turned on seemed more remote than the last. At one point, he thought he smelled cows. They drove through some rolling hills, and when they cleared the last one, an oasis of brightly lighted buildings rose in the east.
Mark said, “That’s the Ak Chin Casino.” Jonathan nodded. Mark downshifted and they slowed to a crawl. He pointed off into the desert. “That’s where we go shooting. The road we need to turn on is up ahead, not too far.”

"Like the horror classic called, “A Portrait Of Dorian Gray,” current photos of Stephen King seem to reveal a more and more frightful person. If his hair were a little longer he could look terrifyingly like somebody’s granny.”

Yup!

"I had a very, very good experience with a Steven King novel some years ago.”

I too used to love King's novels..until I noticed his obvious hatred of normal Americans and hatred of Christians in general(Particularly Methodists which I found odd because in the South they are considered mild and unoffensive)It's usually Baptists with a strong Southern drawl the media uses as an evil "Christian"(although Catholic priests are getting it in the neck lately)

I read your endorsement of Peretti's "This Present Darkness"and looked it up and found Wikipedia's description very intriguing

"Demons, as well, are depicted as being ink-like shadows in the darkness, flowing from shadow to shadow, until the time comes when they truly reveal themselves as monstrous beasts with bat-wings and armor.”

As a farm boy who loved horror comics, I used to play in the fields and barnyards on dark summer night with my cousins and friends. It was as bright as an overcast day when the moon was at it's zenith("super moon?") But the shadows it cast were as black as...well.. Hell. As we past the shadows I always kept an eye peeled for a pair of "staring red eyes" and the snap of a twig. If either was noticed I was ready to run like the Hounds of Hell were chasing me and I wouldn't be safe until I reached the warm glow of the porch light or the security light of the garage in the barnyard. Even then I would peer back into the darkness to see if the glowing reds eyes were staring back at me.

So being tired of King's rants and his repetitive writing I've been on the prowl for a good horror writer.

One question though. Is Peretti heavy on the Christian theme. By this I mean I don't want to have a sermon disguised as a novel. I don't mind Biblical sound tidbits sprinkled here and there but like King's hatred of Christians, I don't want to be lectured to either. I just want to be entertained for a few hours and love a good scare. Demons with their wickedness scare the $&$#^ outta me

Thank you(long read for FR)

Almost every new fiction author is rejected multiple dozens of times. (I know this from personal experience)

Getting a work of fiction published is hideously hard. There are actually many people trying to do it and most of them never manage it even with the help of professional editors and writing coaches.

Or you could go the route that my best friend used. He started writing murder mysteries in Kindle format, and a few years later ended up on the New York Times Bestseller list, at the time a little ahead of Sue Grafton.

A while back he got an email from Amazon congratulating him on selling $500,000.00 in Kindle books.

And now his books are on Audible and in paperback.

And it all started from one Kindle book self-published in 2014.

"I thought King’s writing was superb until he wrote Tommyknockers. The introduction of space aliens struck me as a copout and I never read another thing he wrote.”

Wasn't it though?

Years after reading it I think I know why he veers into the "Aliens" concept. He's a virulent atheists and doesn't want his work reinforcing religion of any stripe

I, myself loved his earlier works(started with "Salem's Lot" "The Shining" and others)

I love supernatural themes and not very much into the Space Opera novels(I did enjoy Frank Herbert's "Dune" series)

Tommyknockers stunk(kept waiting for evil spirit trolls to emerge from some abandoned mine shafts)

But it took reading "Gerald's Game and re-reading"It" to see that King is a serious pervert(and drug addict, alcoholic and smoking pill popper)

"Desperation" was the last SK novel I intend to ever read. Not another dime!
