This is a real Militia (Kata’ib Hizbollah) they were established and are commanded (covertly) by the Iranian regime inside Iraq, with Iraqi employees, just like Hizbollah is in Lebanon. They are one of Iran’s surrogate forces in Iraq. They would not do this without direct approval from Iranian Quds Force Commanding General Soleimani.
Most of those guys get regular paychecks as full time employees of that Militia. Some of them are likely family members of the guys we recently killed in airstrikes against that militia.
This is not a sincere attempt to seize and occupy (or destroy) the embassy. This is a violent demonstration, to rattle American nerves, to rally their own troops after they got smacked down hard with airstrikes, and for media consumption.
It could get out of hand, and the Iranians may want to get the Americans to kill a few of their stooges, for propaganda purposes.
