My elder daughter when she was little, decided they were named “Jameses,”—she had a chubby little friend named James—and was always bringing one or more to us. “Oh, Daddy, lookie, here’s another James!”

First examples of those I met spent much of their leisure time on the concrete of our driveway in New Mexico. I was 8, my sister 5; our idea of Fun With Ball-Bugs involved snapping or flicking them with our fingers as you would flick a speck of dust off... they rolled and rolled and when they stopped, unrolled and carried on crawling.
