I was out this beautiful Tennessee morning, walking in the yard, on the street, amongst the weeds and flowers.
The sun is shining. It rained again last night. Its clean.
I began to pick and taste the wild greens and flowers.
Then I did some easy calisthenics, and some Greek Yoga.
I thought about the simplicity of it all, and how Ive always been like this.
I realizeddang, Im a conservative hippie!
I try to live close to nature.
I eat raw food (sometimes!).
I dont take many supplements, and those of those only natural like apple cider vinegar.
I dont have a workout routineI play with my calisthenics and yoga instead.
I dont like to hold onto a lot of stuff.
Ive lived in my van at one point for a year in Santa Barbara, California.
I meditatenot what I would call weird, chanting stuff. I do this onesimple, something like what Jesus would have done.
Its just a simple, wordless prayer.
I read the Bible, but I dont try to study itjust find inspiration and wisdom for the day.
Im not obsessed with money (most of the time!).
I have friends who think differently than me.
I listen when people speak (okay, not always!).
I do not think us vs. them. I realize everybody is dealing with something, and many dont want to be the person theyve become.
Oh, I do still like classic rock music, and that is pretty hippyish!
I think Ive covered it. Hippies dont have too many cares!
Why do I say Im conservative? Because Im quite traditional (uh Old School!) and patriotic. I wish the best for everybody in every country, but Im all about helping those at home first.
I support life in all its forms and I wish everybody did.
What else? Thats about it. Conservatives (at least Old School ones) are pretty simple people too. Perhaps being a conservative hippie is not so odd at all.
To me its a perfect fit.
I guess it comes back to Jesus again: Love God and love your neighbor. Whats wrong with that?
Perhaps Jesus had some hippie in Him too.

The original “Whole Earth Catalog” edited by Stewart Brand back in the mid 1960s was a fascinating book. Major emphasis on technology, and farming, and self-reliance. It was “Hippie” in that the target audience was tending to “drop out” of the corporate world of the Establishment. But it was “Conservative” because it wasn’t anti-American and it upheld values of freedom and independence. I think a lot of the 1960s was actually like that. But after 1968 and the assassination of King and the urban riots, things changed. Vietnam because a stick to beat America with, and the Democrats shifted radically to the Left. After that, the “Hippies” became a lot more like Greta the Global Warming scold.
I still have a lot of respect for the early Hippie mentality.
ACll things of the last many years considered, the hippy generation wasn’t so bad....all considered!
Now?..........Unholy $h!t!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your timeline makes sense, ClearCase_guy. Thanks!
I had 3 VW campers and went to a lot of rock shows.
Hippy? not so much, there were guns and dirt bikes involved.
By comparison, yeah, the hippies don’t look so bad compared to the new greenies!
"Ohhh, Freedom. Ohhh, Liberty. Ohhh, leave me alone, to find my own way home."
I once considered Beatin’ up hippies” to be a recreation/sport. Does that count?
My hair hasn’t been this long since college.
Who on earth is better than this author ?
NO ONE APPARENTLY.
Even compares himself with Jesus. Gotta say, I’m nothing like this clown.
Love God and love your neighbor. The rest is details.
Gonna beat up the next hippie I see, maybe I’ll beat up you.. look out..

Guns and dirt bikes? Maybe you were a MILITANT hippie, mylife!
Hmmmmm!
I guess I must qualify. Live isolated, care take the land the Divine gave me to tend. I hunt when I need meat, do not kill anything I will not eat. I love to shoot, but targets suit me just fine. I garden organically and am considered by some as a master herbalist, so am able to live off the land. I lived in a commune in the 60’s, drove a VW bus.
I understand the root of conservative is “conserve”.
Where I reside you do not have to like your neighbor to assist them when they have need. You offer help before it is asked for. I avoid political arguments for the most part, but donate and work for the candidates as I am able. I do not assume that just because they are to the right, that does not necessarily make them correct.
I still love the 60’s rock, and love Celtic rock and Symphonic rock.
I can sit on my front porch for hours smoking my pipe, (tobacco, before you ask), taking in the abundance of God.
I study things that might be considered a wee bit strange.
So, yep, guess I am a conservative Celtic Christian hippie too.

I never got into the Dead, but I know people who lived and died with them
You described it well. I was there. That catalog was dedicated to Buckminster Fuller. I studied with him briefly and went to several of his seminars.
Later, Steven Gaskin took a busload of hippies from San Fransicko and eventually settled near Hohenwald (pronounced locally as “Hornwall”) Tennessee and established the largest commune at that time. “Summerville.” https://tinyurl.com/ybaa7lnb
I built an icosahedron cabin in the country near there.
I guarantee that this “conservative hippie” knows all about that.
Gosh we had fun back then.
