Lots of Gin and Tonic (quinine water) kept the soldiers "enjoying" the heat and malaria of India while mostly healthy, when it still held sway over the British Empire!
One uncited benefit of ingesting alcoholic beverages in a really hot climate like India is the rise in internal temp and sweating out. Most viruses function in a narrow band of temp, so too hot is not that far from too cold.
I grew up in India and was too young to understand why my mother gave us quinine pills regularly. They were extremely bitter if they touched any part of the tongue going down. But if us kids swallowed them we usually received a lemon drop or lollipop as reward. Entering octogenarian segment of my life, still healthy as a horse.
