The author forgets that the candidates rarely stay “on topic” for these questions. If I were Trump, I would show up at the debate and each time is was my turn to answer one of the idiotic questions, I would completely ignore the topic and spend my time allotted reading the emails from Hunter Biden’s operations with the Chinese or Russian political “influencers”.
Yes. Mike Pence actually took a big step in that direction. The moderator would ask about Climate Change (or whatever) and Pence just calmly said, "I'll get to that, but I want to respond to what my opponent said about the Supreme Court …"
