Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been accused of traveling to Cancun, Mexico, amid the ongoing crisis in Texas, where millions have been left without power or heat in freezing temperatures.
Photos circulating on social media overnight appeared to show the senator at an airport and on an airplane. The idea that Cruz and his family had flown to Mexico soon spread on Twitter.
Ted Cruz was photographed at IAH in the United lounge flying from Houston to Cancun.
AP confirmed that Cruz traveled to Mexico on Wednesday for a family vacation.
The high-profile Republican lawmaker went for a long-planned trip to Cancun and was expected to return almost immediately, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share private conversations.
Spokespersons for Cruz’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment Wednesday night or Thursday.
“That’s something that he has to answer to his constituents about,” state Republican Party Chairman Allen West said when asked whether Cruz’s travel was appropriate while Texans are without power and water.
“I’m here trying to take care of my family and look after my friends and others that are still without power,” West said. “That’s my focus.”
The situation is getting worse for Cruz as an audio recording was just published where he encourages Texans to stay home:
“… we could see 100 people lose their lives this week in Texas. So don’t risk it. Keep your family safe.”

Enough of the Cruz bashing. He encouraged people to stay home because it’s freaking dangerous to drive in that stuff. How many people have decent tires for snow in Texas? Is the FR a class envy site now?
WTH has happened to this site? Bashing Cruz, when any of us would go to Cancun in a quick minute.

Well, it’s entirely possible that it was planned ahead of the harsh weather, so, the bashing might be a bit premature.
Allen West is a retired army officer who understands the quaint, anachronistic notion of noblesse oblige.
Cruz is an ivy leaguer who understands the concept of, "spring break."

I disagree that he’s being hypocritical. The trip was planned long ago and he urged people not to get in icy roads during the storm. Totally different than Newsome or Pelosi telling people to “social distance” and then going to parties at expensive restaurants and having a hair dresser open specifically for you.

And it’s not an accusation for him. He just came on local news to say it was his daughters’ fault and he’ll be back to TX ASAP as long as there is a motorcade of otherwise busy emergency vehicles to meet him at the site port

Cruz is one of the only good guys out there. He wasn’t outside in Texas. No hypocrisy at all! Heck, I left Texas too when I saw what was coming!
Wait a sec. His “stay home” comment was to keep people from driving in adverse conditions. Totally different context. I’ve got no problem with anyone getting out of Dodge in real bad weather conditions.
