Agricultural machinery company John Deere is planning to manufacture nothing but fully automated farming vehicles by 2030.
Jorge Heraud, vice president of automation and autonomy for John Deere, noted that he sees the company’s future as being a leader in the manufacturing of robotics and artificial intelligence-infused equipment alongside the tech giants of Silicon Valley. John Deere showcased a glimpse of its future line of automated farming machinery last January when it unveiled its fully autonomous 8R farm tractor, driven by an AI rather than a farmer behind the wheel.
According to Heraud, the 8R is the culmination of Deere’s investments in automation, data analytics, GPS guidance, internet-of-things connectivity and software engineering. All of this research and development is a mix of homegrown research as well as the result of acquisitions and partnerships with agri-tech startups.
“This comes from our realization that technology is going to drive value creation and increase productivity, profitability and sustainability for farmers,” said Heraud. “The AI we use involves computer vision and machine learning.”
The science behind this technology was developed by Silicon Valley startup Blue River Technology, which John Deere acquired in 2017 for $305 million. The company’s “see and spray” robotics platform utilizes dozens of sophisticated cameras and processors to distinguish between crop plants and weeds when applying herbicides.

Or things like strawberries, raspberries, cauliflower, etc. etc.. That's why the USA imports so much of that from Mexico, Peru, etc...
But robotics companies are working on speciality equipment for those, too.
OH Yes..and try getting those things fixed when they go bonkers.
Small farmers are saying to hell with this crap and buying older tractors for about 1/4 the cost and are able to repair them without a $1000.00 service call twice a month.
It will take a week.
Oh it is going to rain tomorrow and you will lose thousands of dollars if you do not get it harvested now?
Sucks to be you.
Buy our over priced crap peasant!
Since you are a farmer, how would this really effect you?
If it ain’t red....just leave it in the shed.😉
Well, your beliefs are wrong.
Not only can they pick apples, but almonds, olives, grapes and just about everything else.
We have one business whose ‘chat’ doesn’t understand a single question we ask, no matter how hard I try to dumb-down the language :-)
Do not worry, my FRiends because all this farming is harmful to the environment.
Plants and insects raised, harvested and packaged in sealed buildings provides all the nutritional value a human requires without any of the water, emissions, fertilizer, etc.
1000 Australia schools are now serving chips made from insects to children...indoctrinating them into our new meatless, plant-less future.
He would agree with you.
I apologize for that last one.
“All your food are belong to us”
For someone who doesn’t know about farming… you seem to know a couple of things about farming.
I watch the farming Youtube channel Welker Farms. They’re harvesting now and good luck to an autonomous Combine navigating all of the issues they face.
Indeed, I still use two JD tractors from the 60’s.
The new automated equipment will tilt things in favor of large corporate operations who can afford the capital investment and spread it out over huge acreage.
So basically it’s a “Roomba” for farms.
Illegal aliens will still invade our property, but the GOPers and Chamber of Commerce traitors will lose some talking points.

John Deere for the multi-national corps.
Dear John for the family farm corpse.
