Medicare signups

Posted on 12/19/2022 11:17:49 AM PST by EVO X

I have to go on Medicare early next April. I have my credit reports frozen. Does anybody know which ones I need to un freeze in order to log on? Foot traffic to the local SS office is backed up late February. The local SS office had no clue which credit report I needed to unfreeze.

I believe that if you are on Social Security, then you don’t have to do anything. If you want one of the Medicare Advantage plans, then you should contact them in advance.

Why unfreeze any of them? They’ll call you if they have a question.

You can't create an account online if credit lines are frozen. Trying to get an in person visit to a SS/MC office is several months in the making. That was the point of my post...

Tag along question:

I turn 65 in August so I have to sign up for Medicare. I’ll likely still be working as my wife is a year younger and I carry the insurance. Will I have to pay out anything since I won’t be drawing Social Security due to my work income?

Be careful.

This could be a scam.

Our first scam call this morning was a Medicare scam trying to get online info. Supposedly we need to give them info for our Medicare coverage next year.

The company, I retired from had just sent about a pound of paper work for the new MediCare year for both of us. It arrived last week. We are/were set up for next year with our healthcare provider.

“I turn 65 in August so I have to sign up for Medicare.”

Medicare signup is not mandatory.

I have my credit reports frozen.

Strange use of the Passive Voice here.

Who "froze" your credit reports?

It sounds like you have to sign up for Part A. I keep getting Medicare alerts to sign up after I signed up on the site.

Consult your HR. From my link:

If you’re 65 or older:
You usually don’t pay a monthly premium for Part A if you (or another qualifying person, like your current or former spouse) paid Medicare taxes while working for a certain amount of time (usually 10 years of work).

I went in and signed up. No credit report needed..

I am impressed that you walked into your SS/MC office and were able to signup on the spot. That is not happening in my area. The backlog for walk ins are several months...

Why did you freeze them?

To prevent people from stealing my identity.

To prevent people from stealing my identity.

And now, you want to unfreeze them?! Why, for heaven's sake! Then people could steal your identity!

There is Medicare Part A which is free.

There is Medicare Part B which is not...

It would be really helpful if posters identified which one they are talking about!

Before you make any Medicare choices, check out BoomerBenefits.com

They are great folks to work with and they have plenty of good YouTube videos on the whole Medicare topic if you want to become well educated.

I have recommended them to several friends and all they have been grateful to me for the recommendation!

I think we unfroze all three temporarily. It’s been several years, so my recollection may be sparse.

The routine may’ve changed a little, but the credit bureaus allowed us to unfreeze a specific amount of time. Then it rolled back to frozen. You can always log back into your credit accts to make sure they were locked back down.

Checking that you have credit reports with the big three allows SSA to verify you are who you say you are.

Ignore the yoyos here that say you don’t need that. You do.

Medicare is not free.

You have to pay for part B.
