Those who have been answering you have experience on this.
I don’t, but I will say you have taken a very important first step, which is to admit to yourself and to others that you need help and that YOU want to change what’s been going on.

Every purposeful step in that pursuit brings you closer to peace and probably fulfillment as well.
Don’t be afraid to live in the present without something to deliberately dull your senses. This is your world too.

Alcohol is filling an emptiness in your life. Some people fill it with drugs, sex, gambling, or immerse themselves in their career. You need to fill that hole with Christ.

I lost my step son to alcohol ten years ago.

Jesus Christ knows exactly how you feel. If you trust Him, you won’t regret it.

I have experience with this due to a relative. Multiple rehabs, multiple times he was found literally in the gutter and carted off to the hospital, multiple times he wanted to kill himself. And many AAA meetings.

But what seems to have helped is he changed his life, got out of a bad marriage, sold his home, left CA for Montana....and then he fell madly in love with a woman with whom he has much in common. And the thing is....he was so far down that he realizes how valuable this is. He is well aware of the miracle.

I can only pray it lasts. Mike Lindell has a book about his own recovery. Might be worth looking at.
I haven’t read it but I know a little about it - it takes God.

You have gone the first step, you admitted you have a problem and are looking for help. AA is the best but also immerse yourself in Jesus for he can help you in this world and the next. There are a many good pieces of advice, tailor make one direction for yourself and start. Today is day one.

I couldn’t get sober on my own so I drove myself to rehab. The best 30 days ever. Rehab and AA saved me - have been sober since Feb. 17, 1991, one day at a time.

I’m probably in the same boat as you. I can understand your concern and fears regarding the matter. I’ve been crying out to the VA for a year now and no answers or help. Feel free to contact me through private chat/email on here and we can discuss the issues together. I hope and pray for your well being.

I will pray for you both.

Be strong and God bless you. You both deserve victory here.

I kicked it by just cutting down. Two a night, then one a night, now it’s just whenever, but only one a night.

By training your desires, you train yourself.

Now I could go dry if I wanted to, but I’m fine with just one a night every weekend or so.

I also found that cold turkey doesn’t work for me, so I’m glad I cut it down the way I wanted to.

“...have been sober since Feb. 17, 1991...”

That is super! Thanks for sharing that on this thread.

Surrender. Admit that alcohol won and you lost. Admit that you are powerless over alcohol. Rid yourself of any ideas that you can control alcohol.

Get into a supervised detox, as in a hospital ward that does this. You do not want to try it alone, cold turkey.

Then, get into an inpatient rehab. The folks at the detox can help you find one.

After rehab, you need support to change your life. AA worked for me, 16 years now. I can’t compare it to other support programs.

I will pray for you.

I went to Al-Anon. It helped me immensely but my husband preferred to go it alone and has been sob
er 40 years. My oldest son went to a counselor, my youngest son still drinks.

If you go to AA I hope you can find a good group, it can be hard.

Freeper since pre- 2000. Get a copy of Alan Carr's "Easy Way to Control Alcohol". It's really good, and not what you might expect. Also consider "accountability" with a close friend. This is where when you slip up, you pay. It's surprising how well a monetary incentive can work. With accountability I was able to FINALLY stop smoking many years ago.

And as others have said, it is a spiritual battle also, always keep that in mind and be a wise warrior with prayer and humility. You can do it. PM me your address if you need me to send you a copy of that book :)

Just an observation:

Someone who WANTS help doesn’t go to an internet forum drunk and posit ‘needing advice’...

But if you’re serious, go here:

Friend, my father was a lifelong high-functioning alcoholic, and with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, was able to spend the last 15 years of his life sober, appreciating and enjoying life.

Of all the things he did in his life, it is that which inspires the most respect and honor in me.

He became very involved in AA, going to meetings nearly every night for long periods of time, running meetings, finding jobs for people in AA.

He was one of the strongest and most principled men I have ever known, but even he could not do it alone. Get involved with AA.

I will pray for you, FRiend. Life is rarely so far gone that you cannot rescue it.

It may not be the life you had before, but that may be viewed as a plus. If you can do it, those who care for you can find their way back to you, and you can create a new life.

You can do it. God Bless You.

Good friend was an actual case study on alcoholism. A researcher from IU stayed in contact for 20 years tracking her progress bi annually. She’d been through every rehab that insurance would pay for. 3 day, 7 day, 30 day stays, even Salvation Army and of course AA.

Lost many good jobs

Her father was also an alcoholic, sister preferred pills. Dad kicked it when he almost lost his job as a pharmacist. Stayed cleaned the rest if his life.

My friend was a closeted binge drinker. Could be sober for months and and years, but always went back to vodka.

It eventually wrecked her kidneys and spent the last several years on dialysis with all the complications that come with that. Eventually she’d had enough of hospital stays and put herself in hospice. Lasted 24 hours. She passed in March 2020 just as covid was hitting and didn’t want to die alone in the hospital.

One thing she told me that always stuck...

“Once you learn how to lie to yourself as you look in the mirror in the morning, it’s easy to lie to everyone else”

Good luck, and God bless you.

You can do it
